I don’t mind buying an AM if Pogba leaves but as it stands we have two very good players for that position. A proper DM and B2B will be crucial in Jan or the summer.
Ole just needs to set up his midfield better, imo we would have won all of our games if he’d got this right. We have just enough quality to make top 4 but players aren’t being utilised.

a) Ole plays a 4-2-3-1 whether any of us like it or not, so we can accomodate someone like Fernandes in the '3'. I'd like to see Gomes get games personally, but another quality addition to the squad wouldn't hurt us at all.
b) Pogba won't be here past next summer. If we signed a replacement in advance (eg Fernandes in January), we'd be strengthening the squad now and our position next summer in the market.
c) We're massively - overly in fact - reliant on Pogba to start attacks, create chances and get goals from midfield. If he gets injured, or suspended, we're in big trouble in midfield.
d) I find the idea that Fernandes is a one dimensional player that can only operate the CAM role effectively to be at best unlikely and in reality complete nonsense. He's got a good work ethic, is very mobile and technically sound. He's operated from different midfield position for Sporting. Are we seriously suggesting that we would have been worse off if we'd had McTominay at CDM, Pogba LCM & Bruno at RCM against Palace at home, for example? I don't buy it.

d) I think you need to watch him a bit more. If you play him in a deep midfield two, you’re going to see the same problems we have at present with Pogba.
Fernandes is an attacking midfielder/number ten. That’s why he’s racking up goals and assists.

I'm not suggesting that Fernandes would or should be played deep in a midfield two.
I'm suggesting that a) he could play the #10 in Ole's current system and b) he could play alongside Pogba with a holding player behind them in certain games (eg Palace). Of course, the latter assumes Ole is open to changing his midfield shape, which I hope he is as it doesn't get Pogba playing at his best and we haven't the quality elsewhere in midfield to compensate for this (unless we sign someone or try drafting in someone like Gomes).

Depends on what the system is and what other players are on the pitch. It also depends who we're playing against.
City play with two more offensively minded players with a sitter in behind. But what City do is compensate with a lot of pressing and work rate which starts from their forwards. If two out of three of the midfield are harding working, and two out of the three attackers are also hard working, you can accommodate someone like Pogba in the midfield. It's about balance.

With a line up James, Rashford, Martial, Fernandes and Pogba, that puts a lot of emphasis on whoever is DM and would totally take away from Pogba's strengths.
