In the article it says they sent a guy to bring back loads of Blackburn shirts but the guy couldn’t and on his return to Spain at the docks in Southampton he panicked and bought 50 Saints shirts. 25 for Bilbao and he gave 25 to Atletico Madrid. Not sure about the shorts.

That's pretty cool

Weird they were originally established by British migrants only to evolve into the local player only model of today

Makes perfect sense when you think about it. Look at British expats in Spain that hate foreigners. Similar situation with Bilbao.

The population of the Basque area (where all their players have to come from) is rougily 3.1 mil. Fair play to them for being in the Spanish top flight at all and the fact that on top of that they often qualify for Europe is astonishing.

I wonder how our Prem clubs would cope with a catchment area that small?

I like that Sociedad abandoned the rule by signing John Aldridge. My Spanish mates dad told me the difference tweet Athletic and Sociedad is that Athletic are proud to be Basque whereas Sociedad hate Spain.

ath bilbao dont have a "basque only player" policy anymore !

havent done so properly for years !

a player born within about a 50 mile radius of the basque country, or someone with fairly recent basque ancestors (within a couple of generations) is eligible to play for them now

incidentally, until the early 90s, Real Sociedad had an even more stringent basque only player policy

they used to only allow players from the province of the basque country, San Sebastian are in (Gipuzkoa)..population around 700, 000 !

they actually won back to back spanish titles in the early 80s too

when they changed the policy in the early 90s, it was originally changed to Extranjeros Si, Espanoles No !

foreigners yes , spaniards (meaning non basque spaniards) no

the first non-basque players to ever play for real sociedad were john aldridge, kevin richardson, and dalian atkinson

Similar population to Wales who would struggle in the Championship for much of their history (bit of a purple patch atm). That said Rugby is often their sport of choice so not really a fair comparison

I find both clubs’ policies pretty pathetic, 1982.

They also consider the descendants of locals who emigrated elsewhere since a lot of the surnames are quite distinctive. Opening up the whole of North, Central and South America for consideration.

There's always a loophole.

the notion of basque being distinct from other spaniards is becoming ever more dilute now, as people from other parts of spain have been emigrating to the big cities in the basque country and mixing in with the local population for decades now

I read years ago there was something similar with Barca. but was not confirmed that the red and blue was due to the people from merseyside going over to help with their war.

Darren

Ha, I guess Spain is quite complex in terms of its regions and people are very proud. I have Galician and Catalan friends who constantly go on about how much they love where they’re from, the galicians invented everything including pyramids according to his dad.

the swiss founder of Farzalona, Hans Gamper, took the colours from one of the swiss clubs he played for, or merchant taylors (that posh boy school) up in crosby (which he also apparently played for at some point)

It is but it’s still not a policy I agree with.

I wonder if an English club did this, would it be considered admirable too or would it be racist?

posted on 5/9/19

England isn’t the same as Spain though and isn’t really made up of regions that have wanted independence for centuries. Unless you change it to London FC and Brexit FC.

posted on 5/9/19

^^^ spanish regions dont want independence

independence sentiment in regions like cataluna and basque country are a minority of the population

posted on 5/9/19

catalan independence is a sham

what it's really about is the catalan ruling elite wanting fiscal independence from madrid

not having to pay taxes and being able to launder all their dodgy money in andorran savings accounts without madrid collering them

posted on 5/9/19

Yeah but that doesn’t change the fact it’s club policy to prohibit players playing for them unless they are of a certain heritage. That’s called prejudice, regardless of the historical differences in the Kingdom of Spain.
