Ashes Series XI

If we're going for players in their positions then for me it'd be:

Burns
Denly
Labuschagne
Smith
Root
Stokes
Paine
Cummins
Broad
Hazelwood
Lyon

Root has had a poor series but is still the 5th highest run scorer across both sides, likewise Denly is 6th. Shows just how awful the majority of the batting has been.

I'd go with Xavi's side. Root has been ok, at least better than Wade anyhow.

Good Team Xavi but id swap Root and Labuschagne around.

Burns
Denly
Root
Smith
Labuschagne
Stokes
Paine
Cummins
Broad
Hazelwood
Lyon

Maybe a case in swapping Paine for Wade???

Probably agree with that although Root seems to score nought a fair bit when he bats at three and comes in early, so on that basis I’d swap his position with Labuschagne

Some seriously average/poor players in this Aussie side though

Bancroft
Harris
Head
Khawaja
Wade
Paine

Just shows how awful we have been that we are losing to them, and also highlights the effect of Smith

I wouldnt say Khawaja is a bad player, averages almost 41 which lets face it most england players would dream of.

Problem is hes practically an Opener what with Warner getting like 4 ducks is 8 innings and barely lasting an over or 2.

Least Burns/Roy/Denly can last 4-5 overs before they get toppled.

He also had a few starts but didnt cash in and i was surprised they dropped him.

One things for certain Warner/Harris have got to be dropped for the next test.

They should of kept khawaja at 3 with labuschagne at 5. Not like it made a difference but for sure in future tests. Head is rubbish.

Root for me despite 5th highest scorer was extremely poor and had so many innings scoring nout and his conversion when over 50 is pathetic. Can understand renly being picked though but he isnt an opener should have been at number 3 for england.

Wade scored a century something only 2 players from each side managed all series

Yeah but I didn’t include him because of his record and he’s a great batsman.

But yeah, goes to show how bad England have been that even with him not making runs they are losing.

Yep Warner has defo been the worst of them all imo, even when he got that lucky 50 odd runs around 10 of them were due to overthrows.

Firstly, can I make it clear, I'm not a cricketer and don't get the intricacies of the game so feel free to ignore my comments. My Ashes observations from the commentators and pundits on TV, radio and newspapers are that although we won the third test, that was down largely down to the efforts of one man. As a team, lessons weren't learnt when it came to batting and T20 tactics continued to be employed. So where was the leadership and advice to the team on employing an attritional approach? This Ashes series has shown that test cricket can have a massive appeal so should we be now looking at our approach when it comes to coaching – there are two types of game out there - T20 and Test. Being the purer version, surely the latter should be given, at the very least, equal prominence.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm going to go for only mid 90s onwards, because they are the players I witnessed.

Hayden
Cook
Ponting
Pietersen
Smith
S Waugh
Gilchrist
Flintoff
Warne
Johnson
McGrath

I put Johnson on because the 2013-14 ashes, might even be a better bowling display than Wayne in 05.

That's pretty much the sort of team I was thinking, but the bowlers I would pick would be Warne, Broad, Anderson and McGrath, means Flintoff would have to make way for one of the batsmen, It would have to be in place of KP, which kills me leaving KP out of this team

He was outstanding in that series but then so was Bell in 2013. That top 6 though...
