Saw it with the wife last month. Was a good film and the ending was completely unexpected. I enjoyed it.

My wife wouldn’t watch it. She’s not a fan of films.
How do you rate it it terms of his other films?

I'd say it's up there as one of his best. Although I don't rate his films as highly as others do in general it certainly has the Tarantino twist to it.

Yeah it does have a bit of a lull in the middle but I think that adds to the dramatic ending, it's slow, slow, slow then bang, I wasnt expecting that. I was expecting something completely different having known actually what was supposed to happen. You won't understand what i mean until you watch it.

Haven't seen it yet but I have heard from all my friends that Tarantino has indulged himself too much which is always a risk with his films, especially his more recent ones.

Everyone I spoke to about it said the Bruce Lee scene was stupid.

I'll probably try and catch it though, in terms of his films as a whole, I definitely prefer his first 3 films over the rest.

Tarantino is massively overrated imo. I haven’t seen outih, but hateful 8 was lame, don’t see the brilliance in resovoir dogs or pulp fiction. Decent enough films with some good dialog is about as good as he gets..

I’ve heard from others that have seen it that unless you know about the Tate history then it’s a bit confusing.

I’ll wait for it to be on tv.,

I loved it but I can understand why many wouldn’t.

I haven't seen it, so not much help.
Liked Reservoir Dogs,
Loved Pulp Fiction,
Didn't like Kill Bill,
So mixed, the one in question didn't get great reviews so ignored.

Jackie Brown is his best for me

Loved this new one but can understand why some people thought it dragged. The Bruce Lee scene was unnecessary but not that bad. Leo is just insanely good in this. Shows why he’s the best actor around at the moment.

Shame Tarantino has got more self-indulgent with age. He clearly is talented but that lack of keeping his ego in check always harms his films.

Performances and cinematography were excellent but QT has definitely crawled up his own backside with this one. Very self indulgent!

It’s a bit of a pointless story and it didn’t feel like a QT film until the very end... maybe some bits in the middle when Leo D is on the set of a cowboy film and struggles with his own performance.

His previous film ‘TheHateful Eight’ is much better, the dialogue and structuring in that film is much more QTish. Once upon a time in Hollywood is more of a case study for aspiring actors.

Agree with this. He peaked with Pulp Fiction and has basically indulged himself ever since. He’s also a weird looking weasely sort of bloke. He looks like a half melted waxwork of Roger Federer.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah he does a bit.

He's never made a film as good as his 90's work since. I would say however that his stuff in the last 10 years has been better than his stuff in the 10 years before that. Wasn't a big fan of Kill Bill and Death Proof is his worst.

Don’t think anyone has mentioned Inglourious [sic]? Amazing film. Not seen Hateful 8 but I did enjoy Django.

Inglourious and Django are both good. Inglourious in particular has some real stand out scenes that show how good Tarantino can be when it comes to building tension.

Django is also entertaining but I lose interest after Di Caprio's character is killed and it descends into a bloodbath gun fight. I feel like nobody finds that stuff as fun as Tarantino does.

Thought the Bruce Lee scene was funny but it did feel a bit awkward the way he was depicted. I think you have to see it as a made up story rather than a true one, even though real people are used and a real event in time, albeit changed.

The whole movie was a metaphor for the various periods of time they all existed in. Leo’s character was past his time, Brad’s was kind of in his own time where he was just cool and happy to do his own thing and Margot was up and coming. Yet in real life she was about to be out of time.

I thought the movie did a good job of showing the sense of dread leading up to what was to (what we assumed would) come and while I didn’t live in the 60s I think it did a great job of making the movie appear like it was filmed in that era. Growing up I was a fan of things like Rawhide, Lost in Space and all those 60s Tv shows. Think Tarantino got it spot on in getting the look and feel of it. And did it in a very ironic way.

And while OTT the ending was one of the most enjoyable endings I’ve ever seen. Walked out of the cinema buzzing.

That’s a magnificent film, and imo his best.

I’d go:

Inglourious Basterds
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
Jackie Brown
Hateful Eight
Django Unchained
Kill Bill Vol I
Kill Bill Vol II
Death Proof

The only dud for me is Death Proof. Didn’t understand it at all. The rest I will all very happily watch again, probably more than once.

posted on 12/9/19

I don’t really count Death Proof as a proper Tarantino movie. It’s more part of the double bill Grindhouse movie and I feel he made it with a lot less care involved than his stand alone movies

And imo his best script he ever wrote he didn’t even direct - True Romance. Outstanding and he wrote that while working at a video store. Sold it and that money started his career
