Matic for Pogba

It's certainly not time to drop Pogba. What yesterday showed is that we are completely incapable of creating any thing from open play without Pogba. The question isn't whether we should drop Pogba from a defensive midfield position that clearly doesn't utilise his strengths and amplifies his weaknesses. He should be playing further forward and is easily our best player when that happens

We should have sold him not drop him. But seeing that Ed is a fool, we are stuck with a want s way player.

So to make the most of it, agree but also not drop him, move him somewhere further forward more effective.

I said yesterday that Ole needs to move Pogba forward into somewhere between the #10 role and Pogba's best LCM role. Basically line up with a flat two with Pogba given license to play almost where he wants.

I'd also rather see Fred than Matic.

Yes, I absolutely agree with that; but *given* that it doesn’t look like Ole is going to change the approach, and we’ll be playing with two sixes stationed a distance from a front four, is Matic, or Fred even, a better option to play alongside McT?

Baz and Berba: see my reply to merry above.

We should be playing 4-3-3 with the players we have. But it really doesn’t look like Ole is going to change his approach.

Given that, should he drop Pogba?

I don't know why Ole doesn't play this team

Going into yesterday, he'd still created the second most chances in the league, in spite of being played badly out of position. And given that nobody else in our team creates anything, I think he still needs to play. Matic is just too cumbersome for me to ever want him to be in our team tbh. Fred is the great unknown. And that in itself is better than knowing someone can't do the job. So I'd certainly play him before Matic

With Matic you have a more reliable and dependable custodian of the ball who won’t disappear and leave McT completely isolated, or be found wandering around thirty five yards out because he doesn’t know whom to pick up or what he should be doing.

------------------------

He usually is wandering around 35 yards from our goal though.... Not because he doesn't know what to do or who to pick up... He's just too fookin slow and passive to do it

Ole needs to change the system. Pogba far too much a liability in a two, needs moved forward to a less key position. Why ole does not do this, I’ve no idea.

Four of his chances created came against Chelsea though.

He created one against Wolves, one against Palace, and nothing against Soton until Ole finally changed the shape when Lingard and Matic came on and moved Pogba to the left sided eight role. Then he exploded and gave Rashford two excellent chances in a matter of a couple of minutes.

I don’t think we can pretend that Pogba is creating remotely consistently from the deep-lying six role.

When he isn’t out of position when attacks break down he doesn’t leave gaps though.

He might not be very mobile, but he knows how to shield a defence. Pogba was laughable against Soton for sixty minutes. Just jogging about looking all around without a clue about what he should be doing or where the danger was.

Pogba is capable of so many more assists than Matic. For example he can create potential assists from penalties instead of being selfish and scoring himself. And we get a lot of penalties so that is a lot of potential assists. Just need our other players to step up and finish them after Pogba has set them up from the penalty spot.

The stats said he'd created 13 chances... I'm not his biggest fan, and I have serious doubts over his attitude and commitment. But he's literally our only even remotely creative outlet on any thing approaching a regular basis.

Thank goodness we didn't sell him. Because if our summer window is anything to go by, we wouldn't have bothered to replace him

posted on 15/9/19

The difference in our game when Fred came on for Matic means the replacement for Pogba should be anyone else but Matic. The midfield 2 should be either Fred or tuanzebe. At least provide substantial defensive presence.

Matic is done. No need glorifying an average performance

I don't disagree in pogba at all... I hate him playing deep

I just don't think Matic does the screening job very well anymore... Players just drift past him... Or when he does move forward he's as much use as pogba getting back

Said yesterday... We just don't have the players for a 4231...you either have 2 world class players, or 2 dynamic tireless workers if its to work... And we have neither

Ole at molde was supposedly a 433 man... Whether the 4231 is down to our squad still being unbalanced and short of quality and numbers in midfield (as opposed to having several 10s or players capable of playing 10)... I don't know.

We def need to switch to a middle 3 though...

posted on 15/9/19

Shugs, Ole at Molde started with a 4231. The team did change shape during games, so they may start off as 4231 and then change to 433,or vice versa.

We are still lacking in Midfield and that causes the most issue.

If we are going to use Pogba, we will need to use 433,with Fred and McTominay being the more defensive of the 3 and Pogba given a bit more attacking licence and free to roam.

No need to drop Pogba.

Drop this formation.

McT as DM
Fred and Pogba in front of him.

This isn't difficult to figure out.

posted on 15/9/19

We aren’t going to drop the formation by the looks of it though.

Five games in and we’ve started 4-2-3-1 with a deep midfield pair and a front four every week.

I know many people want to see us playing with a midfield three. God knows, I am one of them and have been shouting that since Pogba signed.

But the question is: Given that we will be playing 4-2-3-1, should Ole drop Pogba?

You drop your best player ? Your only world class player ? You really deserve to be a mid-table team.

To want him ahead of Pogba... Well
