Like their tanks in WW II, they're still a bit backwards.

They have a weird way of giving backhanded compliments. This is where football (and sport in general) can do great work by bringing this to he public eye.

It's a cultural thing though, and something that will die with older generations. You aren't going to change an 80 year olds ways now and whilst the comment is completely out of order, as explained in the article and with context, in Italy, in that generation it was (in a strange way) a compliment to say Lukaku is unstoppable.

There's plenty of things wrong with our culture too but we like to pretend we are holier than thou because we are politically correct.

It is a far bigger problem than people realise and I am half Italian.

My grandmother never spoke to my wife because she is black and never saw our children till she died.

The Spaniards have improved recently and the country is going forwards but Italy has regressed and it is shameful to see.

Guess you'd know more than me then. I can only speak from a tourists perspective of Italy but maybe the cities like Florence, Rome and the lakes are a little morehttps://www.ja606.co.uk/pages/smileys/ westernised.

That must have been hard on both of you, especially for your wife I can imagine. Its such a terribly pity that a grandma doesnt get to see her kids because of racist feelings. We are all the same inside and for the children its even more tragic that they never got to know their granny.

I thought Italy was already a western nation. What makes it less westernised?

MUDD - would you say the younger generations share the view of generations past?

Let's not forget only a couple of decades ago grandparents in the UK may have felt similar.

Your bottom paragraph is nonsense. Compared to a lot of mainland Europe, the British public are very tolerant (of course there are exceptions). Saying this doesn’t make us holier than thou

I dated a French girl once and a lot of her extended family were wildly racist. I asked her about it and she said ‘it’s how it is in France’.
If this is the attitude of the public then something dramatic needs to change.

I think busby is spot on with his comment about the UK's holier than thou attitude.

Our society absolutely reeks of it, looking down on every other country as if we don't have some serious zenophobic issues highlighted in this whole Brexit debate.

FFS the Leave campaign used Turkey (a Muslim country) joining the EU as a way to get people to vote Leave AND IT WORKED.

Tells you all you need to know.

A lot of Germanic nations(Germany, Netherlands, Austria and Belgium) were racist towards the southern european people like italians in the 60s and 70s.

comment by Cloggy (U1250)

Not sure what you mean by that. Dutch have been moving in droves to Southern Europe. Not to speak of holidays. Spain and France the most popular destinations.

There is more "natural" racism in Spain and Italy. These people say this type of thing and don't think they are being racist. I remember Aragones and his remarks about black players while he was Spain boss. Let's not be holier than thou - there are problems in the UK but in the Med and Turkey etc, it's awful!

I'm not purely referring to race. The British public have a habit of only attacking themselves to tragedies of other Western nations, we have an obsession with material items rather than emotional ones, our democracy is a joke. Brexit was built on racial undertones for christ sake.

Yes we are PC, but when you look a little deeper this country has no right to point fingers elsewhere. If you look at top trending political issues, immigration is regularly on top. Alongside this are things like wages, unemployment, education and poverty.

The chant about his peeenis was racist in a non obvious way. People chanting it were ignorant to why it was racist in a way that people in Italy are ignorant as to why their chants are racist. I truly believe England is less racist country than a lot of places in the world but ignorance still exists there even if people genuinely think they are enlightened in a way say, Italian fans aren’t

Not sure people were concerned about Turkey joining cos it's a Muslim country. More like it has a huge population and the immigration figures from there would've been huge had they joined.

On Italy, they just seem to be a few decades behind countries like the UK and France on racism. Hopefully in time it gets ironed out. All Western countries at some point have had bad problems with racism.

Hatred, prejudice, ignorance, discrimination, otherness-identification, labelling, stereotyping etc., are not attributes/traits confined to any particular socially constructed group.

To pretend that any such attribute/trait is more, or less, present within one socially constructed group is just another example of those traits/attributes manifesting themselves.

And, by the way, no such thing as 'race', 'racism' or any of its derivatives. It's just a 19th century invention of prejudice social commentators, 'bad scientists', colonialist justifiers etc., that was used as a tool to facilitate, justify, legitimise etc., those very same traits/attributes (and others) identified above.

We are a species. Which has specific definition and meaning (no pun intended). As a species there are no further biological divisions - apart from the ones located in the various sexual or sexual characteristics.
