Living in Spain I see a lot of things which would be considered racist in England but is just part of the weird humour over here and while I don’t think many people in Spain think they’re being racist and would be aghast if what they did was explained to them as being hurtful, it does exist.
There’s always a line between intent and blissful ignorance - rather than punish Silva it would be better to have him come out publicly with an apology and that should be the end of it.

Why shouldn’t he? Should sterling lie about how he thinks about his mate so that he can appease anti racism groups:
Where do we draw the line. So he must now lie so that he doesn’t hurt Liverpool fans feelings?
The Sterling bashing is daft.

But that's the thing, Spain and Portugal are pretty backwards with their views to race which is why they see no issue with the Conguito mascot, I'm always shocked when I still see the sweets in shops when I go there. In the environment they live in they don't see the problems other nations would such as Britain where there is a far greater integration of race.

No contradiction at all. Sterling made it clear in that interview that it was not wise to post it on social media but what he denies is that Bernardo is a racist.
We have all agreed in most of our opinions his intent was not racist. He is guilty of being naive and stupid.
How that affects Sterlings anti racism agenda??
In society we must accept that we have people who say things as they see them. They may not be sensitive to far reaching effects of what they say but doesn’t make them terrible people.
Pep hasn’t come out well in this but then again if you know Pep he firstly speaks his mind and doesn’t give 2 Sheits about what people think of him.
That’s who he is. To also call him a racist because of his personality traits is defeating the whole racism agenda

So because some might think that there is racism involved Sterling must not give his own opinion on the matter. Are you actually being serious?
My initial thoughts were he's not racist and its just inappropriate/stupid....lads banter in a public domain. Without any bad intentions behind it.
But after looking at the tweet again I don't see how its funny in any way or any situation where I'd consider drawing one black persons attention to that never mind thousands. It's pathetic.....i love taking the p!ss outbof my mates but that's just repulsive in my opinion.

No, I agree and I also had that same halfcast thing when I moved to London - Bournemouth was pretty racist in retrospect!
In Spain I speak to these people every day and they all seem pretty open minded and not the least bit racist. But I think they just haven’t had the same integration as you say regarding that many black people around them every day as you see in England. And that in itself leads to ignorance.
I don't understand why the OP is making it about Sterling. His allowed to speak out about something he feels strongly about surely.
And if he feels that this instance isn't racist he can say so.
And the writers award wasn't his doing, and it's only opinion it was undeserved.
A very bitter little article imo.

Because Sterling left his club under a cloud and went on to become a much better player who has won the PL. It is pathetic, trying to point score over issues like this. We had the same a few days ago with the Hillsborough chants.

When I was a kid I used to call myself half cast because that was what I had heard I was. It wasn't until I moved to London that I realised how wrong it was to use the term. That doesn't make me racist, but I was ignorant and learnt, I'm sure Silva will too.

I actually think it is a crazy decision. Everything is classed as racist nowadays.
If a player posted a picture of De Bruyne alongisde the milky bar kid would that be racist? No it wouldn't so why the other way around??

exactly
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Its not racist i agree but Kick it Out have kicked off so the FA needed to follow the protocols. Man City and Silva should have kept it simple and not argue with the complaint.

Why did Sterling defend him? Baffling.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why shouldn’t he? Should sterling lie about how he thinks about his mate so that he can appease anti racism groups:
Where do we draw the line. So he must now lie so that he doesn’t hurt Liverpool fans feelings?
The Sterling bashing is daft.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Glen Johnson thought backing Suarez was the right thing to do because he was pals with his teammate. He got bashed for wearing the t-shirt
End of the day Sterling has become the face of anti-racism and has done well out of it. He should not have been commenting on the issue. A bit of contradiction from his end.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Two totally different events, Suarez and Silva, not really a comparison to be made.

If I was black and his mate I wouldn't be laughing that's for sure
