Have you thought about writing an angry letter of complaint?

Not being funny...but this is England.

And football.

Wasn’t it many Leicester fans you encountered making the long trip back to Leicester? 🤔

Get that impression.

Perhaps look at videos of rangers v Celtic, Linfield against Glentoran, Liverpool at heysel, or Liverpool fans singing the Munich song, Chelsea v West Ham etc.

Not defending decades if not a century
Of life in football, but perhaps the wrong venue for the precious and Woke.

And why bring up Thatcher chants...Liverpool is a city where Mad Militant were active and they hate the Tories and England, common among many Scousers.

The lib dems sing at conference fringe , Tony Blair Fook off and die.

So perhaps, stay indoors lad.lol

This is a complex and tricky one to tackle Dunge.

I am equally embarrassed by moronic, thick and purely offensive chants when they are unnecessary and unprovoked. Especially when my fellow fans are directing them at friends that I have to go and sit with in the pub afterwards.

But football is tribal, and that is in part why it’s so enjoyable. Us against them every weekend. It’s human nature. I also love a great atmosphere of singing to be created and I’m proud of our club when we get it right, like we did against Spurs.

I also don’t get to many away games anymore, but I do tend to go to the games in the north, and I can tell you that whilst there are always a small number of idiots it’s normally quite pleasant and good banter between fans. Don’t let this put you off - away games aren’t always so lame on the chant front.

I’m confused by others on this thread trying to justify abusive behaviour because it was alright in the 80s and others have once done worse. Aren’t we allowed progression?

I love a great atmosphere. I love a bit of needle between fans. I love clever, passionate chanting. What I don’t love is people who just want to offend others because they’re at a football game. Football is not an excuse.

People out of town drinking at a football game. What could possibly go wrong?

I remember the cops on horses at Filbo, steel fences and fights at just about every game!

I suppose if you sat in the family stand you may of been oblivious to most of what went on.

Now it seems racist remarks are the biggest problem, I seem to remember them too.... "Lick my boots"was the last line of one.

At the Spurs away game earlier this year things kicked off between a couple of Leicester fans a few yards away from me. The chant went up "We're Leicester City, we fight with our own"..........funny in hindsight, not so much at the time. UTF

I interpreted thebluebell’s comment as that. Suggesting Dunge is the one in the wrong for daring to be offended by offensive behaviour.

Don’t get me wrong, I spent my my youth in SK2 and have seen it all and I’m not easily offended. I just think we can be better than those chants as fans representing our club.

It’s an away game mate no disrespect - it’s like complaining that you went swimming but got soaked. As long as there’s nothing racist or really offensive (e,g Hillsborough) then you have to expect it. I can’t see anything in Dunges post that’s particularly surprising or shocking.

I think at home it’s a different story but you have to expect that at an away game

Funny you should mention angry letters of complaint, Black Starr, because I’ve done just that. Here’s a copy and paste of it:

————————

Dear Mr. [surname],

As a fellow Leicester City fan who had the misfortune to be in your presence at this season’s away match versus Liverpool, I am writing to reprimand you about your obnoxious behaviour that day. Having experienced ninety minutes plus of it, I can only conclude that it was - and I do not use the word lightly - boorish.

To be amongst supporters of my club being unconscionably rude to others, in both the home and away ranks, was a distinct disappointment and a downer on what was an otherwise pleasant day. The stewards and locals had been polite throughout the day, and did not deserve to be subjected to such oafish treatment.

Please adjust your behaviour in the future, in particular considering drinking less alcohol as it is evident that you are unable to control it.

Yours in expectation,

Black Starr.

I just need a few email addresses then I’m good to go.

I grew up watching from pen 3 of the old Filbert Street and went home and away in those days. I’ve probably shouted, sworn and said things that wouldn’t be appropriate these days. With age, wisdom and maturity, however, your perspective changes. Especially when you have younger people in your life who you want to influence in the right way.

Banter between fans is best when it’s witty and humorous and - a bit risqué. It should touch the barriers, but not cross them. I don’t think there is any need to be overly aggressive, offensive or violent. The chants that the article references are so dated that they are almost embarrassing.

The club you support is quite often an accident of birth. If I’d have been born 10 miles further north I may well have been a Derby County fan or 100 miles further south maybe a Manchester United fan . People who “hate” opposing fans just because they happen to be born in a different county should probably question their attitude.

I always think that opposing fans are people you should banter with, name call and joke with - but not to the extent where you wouldn’t be prepared to share a pint with them afterwards. I’m afraid that the behaviour that Dunge describes is probably inevitable, but it still demonstrates a lack of intelligence and perspective by those who are doing it.

Did you mention the egg and cress sandwiches that got squashed as a result of fellow individuals overexerting themselves throughout? I Should be compensated for that really.....

This.

Perfectly articulated my views on this. I knew we’d get back together soon after our first ever small disagreement.

Life feels good again.

“We shouldn’t start Hamza Choudhury and Wilfred N’didi in midfield together”

Sorry for a minute there I thought Joby was referring to an episode of University Challenge rather than a Leicester away game

Black Starr - I want to get them thinking about their behaviour, not crying themselves to sleep from sheer shame.

I don’t think BS does nuance.

I would imagine the speed at which BS goes from banter, wit and repartee - to shoving the contents of his cat’s litter tray through your letter box - is probably quite swift.
