They were saying on the Sky paper review last night that access to St Thomas hospital could be jeopardised. If one person (especially if its a child) dies because of the actions of these wealthy middle aged hippies then any public sympathy they might have is gone sharpish.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
One of the demos before led to someone not getting to hospital in time to see their dying parent. Sad.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

What a load of Daily Mail cobblers.

Sure traffic in London has prevented multiple examples of the same
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So why add to the problem?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Long term it may help

This greater good sheit can fack right off. Anyone who targets people instead of governments has the.mindset of a terrorist doesn't matter if they're non violent.

When I first moved to London I remember the first winter there was a a slight sleet shower one morning. I cycled into the office and it was empty. I asked where everyone was and the only people in said it was because of the snow.

Ive noticed the city comes to a standstill when the weather is bad.

Again get the cars off the streets

I don't know how you can be so flippant about peoples right to earn a living being disrupted.

If putting food on your family table or paying your bills was being affected you would see things very differently.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Is your ability to put food on the table or paying your bills going to be affected because a few roads are shut off?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course, at the ER protests earlier this year there were a group of office cleaners who couldn't get into work and subsequently weren't going to get paid.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The same cleaners, builders, plumbers, schoolteachers delayed every day by unnecessary journeys by lazy motorists.

Picking up on one cleaner missing a shift is Daily Mail rubbish. Why not highlight the banker who missed his meeting due to disruption.

You are being manipulated by the media

London is one of the most polluted cities in the world. The only people who should be allowed to drive in London are delivery veihicles, emergency vehicles, trade and Taxi's.

There is no need for anyone to drive. The transport systems work and there are loads of cycle lanes now.

My old neighbor drove 2 miles to work every day in his Porsche. It took him 45 mins. I worked in the building next door and cycled and it took me 7 mins. He did it to pose!!

These car drivers are killing us all. It needs to end!!
----------------------------------------------------------------------

agree with some of that but not all. My mate works for a construction firm. he has to drive around London with tools etc
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He is trade though and I don't mind if there is a reason i.e. trade or delivery. It is the people driving less than 5 miles to their offices and sitting in traffic playing on their phones that should be banned.

Because unlike the cleaners the banker gets paid.

Manipulated by the media, haha.

Really?

How do they get to work when we have 10 mm of snow?

What an odd response?

They couldn't get into work because ER were outside the building they clean so it was out of bounds.

If you can't earn money by getting into work then how on earth can that not affect YOUR ability to feed the family and pay YOUR bills.

Alright then I’ve got a fair question

If you think disrupting road traffic is reasonable, what about trying to disrupt heathrow/gatwick? Is that reasonable too? Or is that a step too far

It’s one thing have public transport in London, what’s the alternative to flying?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

If a road is blocked you can take a diversion. In this instance, with the underground system, there is an alternative.

You're comparing apples and pears here.

But, to answer your question, I believe airports are viable places for protest so long as nobody is put in harms way.

posted on 7/10/19

Also, by making London so congested you actually put more pollution into the air

posted on 7/10/19

The real solution to the transport issue in London and elsewhere is to improve the public transport system. You shouldn't need to take your car in a city like London.

Some XR branch tried to block heathrow not long back, don’t think that’s apples and pears, it’s still disruption

posted on 7/10/19

I know they did, I remember it well.

It's still apples and pears because they are very different targets with far bigger ramifications when targeting airports.

I would suggest they should avoid airports as public opinion is important and 'stopping people getting their holidays' is not going to win them friends, despite the fact that air traffic must be reduced (the vast majority of flights are being used by the same small number of regular flyers rather than holidaymakers btw).

----------------------------------------------------------------------
That’s the London mayor’s problem, they’re sitting in the wrong place in the first place, sadiq khan doesn’t work there!

And as said earlier, south of the river doesn’t have anywhere near the same underground network as north of the river. Again that’s city hall’s problem.

That’s another big debate as to what’s necessary air travel and what isn’t, Pandora’s box

posted on 7/10/19

I think it's a bit simplistic to blame it on the current mayor. It's the result of years of poor planning and private ownership of public transport.

I'll give you an example from outwith London. I live in Aberdeen and support Dundee United. It's around 70 miles between the two cities. It's more affordable for me to drive in the car on my own to the games on a Saturday afternoon than it is for me to take any sort of public transport (bus/train).

That's a ridiculous situation to be in and needs to be resolved asap.

I use public transport. So we both earned during the last ER protest but a few cleaners didn't, through no fault of their own (according to you).

Is your beef with the reason for the protest or the protest form? Because as has been pointed out, there are alternative routes.

It would have cost me over £100 to get into London in rush hour from where I live on the South Coast last week. I ended up driving to Croydon, paying £12 parking for the day and getting the train from there for £18 to try and save money. Its ridiculous having to do that for what would have been an hours train journey.

You expect the state to subsidise for your travel? Being realistic.

The reason why they’re all privatised is cuz it’s too costly to run and are draining the government coffers dry. While I don’t like that companies are charging the public excessive money for travel so they can line their fat pockets, it is what it is, nobody does anything without a benefit

I've made several comments on this thread which make my feelings very clear but just to reiterate I think they are a bunch of rich lefty wood be hippies and like alot of people the more they threaten folks right to get on with their lives the less I will listen.

I'm off to pick my lad up from school now then off to park for a kick about so no more over scrutiny for a couple of hours please.

Sorry....you don't think the state is subsidising rail as it is, even in private hands?

https://fullfact.org/economy/how-much-does-government-subsidise-railways/

It gets more subsidies now than when it was in public hands, and yet the rail companies make a staggering profit.
