Liverpool 70/80s V Man Utd 90/00s

Pretty sure Man United also won the UEFA cup winners cup in 1991

Nothing in it really. Proud that two North West clubs and North West cities have dominated English football for decades.

Liverpool all the way, our league wins led to European Cup wins. Man U have underachieved at the top level in Europe.

Tough one. Liverpool had some incredible players in the earlyv80’s. But our later teams equally did. Keane v souness would be very interesting. . .

I’d pay to see Keane V Souness today

Liverpool had several teams under several managers there.

The fact is 1990 could be included as Liverpool's last hurrah just as 1990 was Ferguson's first.

Fact is Liverpool's were done as a team were money came from gates not tv and so others like forest, villa and others could compete.

Utd had only arsenal in patches until the billionaires came in to match the revenue

Keano would sheet his kecks, saw him looking scared when they were discussing United on sky sports recently, you could tell keano wouldn't answer back, Souey would do him.

Hard one to call
Pretty similar dominance wise

Only difference is United had that continuity under one manager while Liverpool had it under 2/3

Would say the CL is harder to win than the European cup but by the same token you had to be champions to win the European cup

Both clubs did it pre petro dollars through their own commercial means, having lived through both eras I have total respect both sides, sourness by the way was a monster of a player all the touch and passing ability of godle a rocket of a shot and the steel of Roy Keane up their with Robbi for me as one of the greatest midfield players I’ve ever seen

posted on 17/10/19

Some serious spell check here will keep the sourness not intended and throw in Hoddle and Robson

We won two club world cups btw

I think some of the latter United sides weren’t as good - even though they still managed to pick up titles. Put that down to Ferguson if you like - or perhaps the drop in quality of the Premier League.

Liverpool however, always had incredible teams in their dominant years and managed to dominate on the Continent as well as at home - so I genuinely think Liverpool’s period of success was greater.

I also think for a club that has gone a while without a title, we’ve done pretty well for a barren spell.

4 league cups
3 FA cups
1 UEFA cup
3 Super Cups
2 European Cups

It’s arguably the most successful barren spell the game has ever seen.

wait, i know there's a nice pattern in the years you've stated for the article OP, but what about 2010-2013.
Them years weren't too shabby either..
another 2 more C.L finals and a League Title being the highlights...

A combined team

Neville...........Hansen............Ferdinand..........Nicol

Ronaldo.............Keane.............Scholes...........Giggs

Souness or Gerrard over scholes for me and Barnes over Giggs. Not sure about Neville at RB either. Stevie Nicol would get the nod for me there and then looking at a left back, possibly Irwin.

Yeah, two great left backs to choose from. Could play Irwin at RB.

No issue with Gerrard over Scholes, but I went with a partnership. Must admit I forgot about Barnes. Giggs for longevity reasons?

Had similar careers in some respects. Flying wingers that moved central once the legs had gone but good enough footballers to still have plenty about them once the speed had gone. Giggs was an amazing player and the amount of time he had at the top was amazing. For me though, Barnes at his best is better than Giggs at his best. I think if English clubs weren't banned from Europe during that time when Barnes was at his peak, he may be recognised a little more.

John Barnes would be one of the first names on the team sheet.

Phil Neal gets in right back. He still has more European cups than Manchester United

Liverpool team was before my time, but wasn't the european cup less rounds and no group stage back then?
for that reason utd might edge it for some people?

Re:metro, it is amazing you've won those trophies in your "poorer" spell.

clearly a 90s childhood.

I'm sorry but even leaving aside the 1970s sides Souness and mcmahon were VASTLY superior players to roy keane. Hell i'd say robson was even a better player.

As for scholes, he couldn't tackle, you can take your pick of better players than him.

clearly you've no understanding of the difficulty of european travel and eastern European reffing in the old European cup.

As a straight knockout competition is was more difficult. Frankly the group stages these days is very easy. spurs proved that last year.

In ye olden days we would not have won no 6 last year as we'd have gone out to napoli round 1. never mind the disaster at red star.

Refereeing in ye olden days was infamous and if you went behind the iron curtain you could be assured of being cheated.

get the tin foil hat out son.
As I said it's before my time, but less game would be easier no matter how you look at it.
Your spurs excuse is a random one, as they struggled to get out the group and had a group of PSV,Barca and Inter. Much harder. Chelsea as reigning euro champs also got knocked out in group stages.

Don't be so defensive.
