Nicolas Pepe will go down as the worst flop in league
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I raise you 50m Fred with no discernible skill set.

Also that one is funnier because it was a red herring from Pep that Ed chomped on.

How long is his contract? Not sure he needs to do something "very drastic" nor "very quickly".
He had no pre-season, playing catch-up, and thrown in earlier than he should've due to the fitness issues of Laca.
In reality he should have been coming off the bench while he tried to get up to speed. Starting him too soon has probably knocked his confidence as well.

He was by far our best player yesterday, although he should have scored. It may take a little time, but he will step up in time.

Barring the goal miss, this was probably his best performance so far. Give it time.

The areas where he is failing - decision making, finishing - are not areas affected by 'being new and settling in'.
------
Yet the same was said about Henry, his finishing in the first few games was woeful and his decision making worse.
Pires suffered too.

The big difference between those two and Pepe is that they were playing in a free flowing, attack minded team alongside the likes of Bergkamp, Vieira and a strong back 4 whereas Pepe is playing in this team.

Had it not been for Pepe’s skill earlier on in the move and his lung busting run there wouldn’t have even been a chance for him or someone else to miss. Not sure that’s the best example to pick on to be honest #justsaying

All new players should get a season. We even gave Xhaka, Mustafi and Kols that.

And Pepe actually played well last night.

If we are going to attack Emery for playing too conservatively and having an awful game plan that gives us no attacking momentum, then we have to excuse the attacking players somewhat.

Not sure that’s raising considering he was 25m less and not as highly rated

What is Pepe supposed to do? He had a good individual game yesterday, bar the finish.

Our striker can't really link play, our full backs atm aren't great, and our midfielders are barely allowed to get forward. He has no one to work with.

The obvious solution here is to get rid of Bumery and install a manager who doesn't soil himself when a player makes a slightly risky pass. But I fear we'll only do that when top 4 is out of reach. Even then it actually wouldn't surprise me if we gave him till the end of the season.

Players need time regardless of price tag.
Look at Hazard at Madrid.

Pepe made 4 tackles before he was subbed off last night.

Xhaka, Guendouzi, Luiz and Sokratis could only muster a combined total of 5 between them over 90 minutes.

Any attacking player with a bit of graft in him will always be welcome.

But they are affected by confidence, and if he feels like he is struggling in areas of the game that bit of confidence you need wont be there.

Any hope of Zaha was dead when Everton entered the bidding process.

Yesterday he was best player on the pitch. Yeah he had one chance but no one takes all chances, Salah needs 3-4 chances to score one goal. Aubameyang is very lethal this season, but that won't last forever, when we create 4 real chances for Pepe and he misses every of them, then you can judge him.

He’s been creating chances most games he’s played, and probably contributed more than any other attacker last night. He’s far from our biggest issue at the moment, so no point piling in on him. Yes he should of scored last night, but Auba misses sitters as well. He needs to improve for sure. But while the midfield is totally absent and not creating chances for anyone, or giving the ball to an attacker in advanced areas, all our attackers will struggle to make an impact.

All of our forwards are constantly dropping deep to get the ball, and are rarely receiving it in dangerous areas. Pepe nor any other forward can be relied on to win a game with no midfield help every game, improve that and I believe the attackers will be more effective.

More of a flop though.

Pepe isn't yet a flop, just struggling. If he's still missing open goals and barely contributing next season then he will have it over Fred.

watch the full game last night (I was bored and on RWC & EPL come down), I thought he looked a very tidy player with bags of potential.

Must admit, its the chances such as the one he missed that distinguish the "could be's" to the finished article, but it's rare we see a player come across to the EPL and bed-in seamlessly - especially at his age.

You've got that settled in almost immediately, like RVN, Torres, Suarez, Auba to an extent...and then players like Evra, Vidic, Henry(!), Drogba that took a bit more time but turned into world class players of their own accord.

We were never going to afford a reasonable down payment for Zaha, much less negotiate anything close to his asking price.

A lot of people made fun of our rumoured £50m summer transfer budget, but it has proven to be eerily accurate.

The £21.7m that we expect to spend on Pepe's first instalment and wages in this financial year is almost half of the £54m total annual costs for Ceballos, Martinelli, Luiz, Saliba, Tierney and Pepe combined.
