Lanza: Their stats may be no good, but they could be worth a punt. DM has trialled quite a few and you have to trust that he knows what he is doing. If their stats were any good they would probably not be available.

I was going to say that Uthred and Nookie were suitably unambitious, but they were actually ambitious based on the performance; it was BVZ who expected a loss and was probably closest to reality. Taylor is always a handful and Micky will gain some comfort in naming him as the scorer. Why was he taken off?

An absolutely terrible performance - but Clough and Burton should be more embarrassed that they did not win! Let's face it, we gave them the two they managed to score, but they missed many easy chances.
I've said before that DM should start Wright over Daniels now Wright is fit. Daniels gives away far too many fouls. The substitutions were strange to say the least. With Whiteman hobbling, may be he should have come off rather than Sheaf, but I do not think Gomez is yet in the class of either of them. May be there was an injury issue.
Why take off the only Rovers player having a reasonably good game - Taylor! I'm becoming a fan of this guy, and it was my wife that insisted I put him as the scorer, or I may have put Sadlier as many did - and he had a poor game.
I like playing out from the back if the team has the brains and skill necessary (eg, Man City), but based on this game the Rovers are nowhere near the required level. Too often the back pass is stupid and/or careless, and sometimes Dieng takes to long on the ball and in the end creates an opportunity for the opposition. However, most times the other defenders give him very little good options.
I like us trying tp play on the ground good football, but the decision making has to improve.
We played much worse than against Oxford, but today got away with it, so I suppose that is a positive!

I forgot to mention how pleased I was at the total silence for the 1 minus + before the game to remember our fallen heroes.
I do not come from a military family, but my wife does. Her father was with Montgomery at El Alamein and her Grandfather was in the Boer War and WW I.
I'll be wearing my Poppy Broach for the next two weeks, and I'm amazed how many of the youngsters over here still respect what happen in the the two wars. May be not all is lost.

Yes a funny old season so far. But if I remember DMs time at West Brom had a similar pattern. Weve played some excellent stuff but also some naive stuff too. We dont seem to adapt well to different teams styles. I would hope that Wright starts alongside Anderson in future. Then our back line looks reasonably solid. Whiteman and Sheath are a sound midfield pairing but prone to off days. Taylor is probably the biggest success of the season so far. Copps can still shine brightly but mostly at home rather than away. The rest? Nobody has really made that big an impact. Perhaps Sadlier is nearest and is a good utility player. I still think we will be near or in the top 6 at the end of the season. The two recent signings are a mystery. May be a cheap stop gap solution until the January window?

I watched the entire broadcast and kept expecting to see one side outclass the other, probably near-total dominance, a goal under constant siege with extreme incompetence in defence, a stream of lucky escapes, inaccurate passing, and tactical ineptitude.

It was not apparent. It was more like an end-of-season game with two mid-table teams. Burton perhaps had more purpose against a Rovers side which had 8 or 9 players who passed the ball around quite efficiently with a loose objective of shooting at goal, but with no great imperative of actually being all that serious about it. I will comment on the other 2 or 3 shortly.

Burton had several players who looked more determined in their objectives, yet did not exactly display a killer touch. Their first goal was a wonderful shot from a challenging angle and they got a penalty from a rather clumsy thoughtless and unnecessary challenge.

Rovers goals were the result of taking chances in the penalty area, a part of the pitch where Burton rather curiously did not seem to contest for the ball all that intensively.

So, there was skill from our side, but for the most part somewhat aimless, with several players, Sheaf, Gomez, and Thomas not seeming to want to get too involved. May probably saw more of the ball in 5 minutes than Bingham and Thomas did in total. Dieng was impressive and I thought most of the rest did OK, but coasted, as though winning was necessary.

So, the attitude was unsatisfactory, but on a cold analysis of how each side played Burton probably did not win because they failed in the very area where Rovers succeeded.

Getting very silly now, last 4 games I've seen us play, the opposition does the same thing. Drops off so we can start to play out then 3 or 4 players push right up on our defence, waiting for the mistake. When it comes weve been lucky so far, Burton missed at least 3 easier chances than the one they scored from. Big Joe must of been smirking to himself watching this game.
The new big lad did well, won some great headers, but, nobody gambled, probably not used to our forwards winning a header.
Sadlier had, for me, his worst game this season. Got lucky with his goal, but looked of the pace.
Dieng is without doubt our best keeper, but for the love of God, stop giving me heart attacks when the ball is at his feet.
When are we going to leave players up front when we're defending a corner, lost count of how many times Dieng came and won the ball, then when he wanted to get us on the attack, nobody there.
Need to get that check book out and sign some of our own players in January. No good having to bring in 4/5/6 players every season just to make a team. This is where the real players start to push themselves forward, wanting a start and not being on the bench.

There was a virus that hit the squad in the week before the match and a number of the first team had been unwell.
Sheaf was sick at half time which is why he was subbed.
Taylor got two knocks and was down on his haunches a couple of times before he was taken off so he must have been struggling late on.
I also thought that Thomas did ok, he held the ball up when needed and added a new dimension to our forward line by being able to win headers against big defenders, something we haven’t had for a few seasons.
He is growing in confidence and should get better.
Give the lad a chance.
Gomes too is improving as he gets more game time and did very little wrong on Saturday.

As for playing out from the back, that is how DM wants the lads to play so we had better get used to it.
