Did the two sets of results at the same time and forgot to adjust my algorithm for the second set. Schoolboy error and costly.

Eh...it's easier to predict the outcome at the end of the season that it is to predict the outcome of 6 specific matches. Over time, averages kick in and individual errors have less of a weighting.
That's counter intuitive.. you're saying that predicting 6 results is harder than predicting how 20 people will choose to predict over the course of hundreds of fixtures and then predicting how those results place them in the final standings.
You can apply your law of averages to six fixtures too.
