Yep... actually feel bad for the Refs, they have been totally undermined. Its ruining the game. Football is all about mistakes, Players, managers, Refs.... Its what makes it great. Its all become too clinical. The authorities will totally ruin the game if the're not careful

I disagree. Football is not all about mistakes and that's not what makes it great IMO.

more mistakes now VAR is in action though

If they are to stick with it, then they IMO the role of VAR should be to highlight something to review to the ref, who should then be the one looking at the screens making HIS decision.

It should never be the purpose of some guy in a remote location making a on-pitch decision, only ever bringing incidents to the refs attention for him to decide.

To me its clear the refs dont want that pressure and attention, because they then have nowhere to hide. They're bottling it

Won't be long before they have FA officials in the stands canvassing for mobile phone footage from the fans in the mindless pursuit of the perfect camera angle.

The 'Clear and obvious' mantra seems to have went out the window as well. the Alli handball is a clear and obvious a mistake as you will see, yet they still took 5 mins and didn't overturn it. It's insane.

English football deserves VAR - over-paid, over-hyped, no soul & now somebody in a dark room miles away measures arm-pits. You couldn't make it up

yes but.....so clear and obvious no one even saw it happen in real time, no one appealed, no one except the TV viewer knew what was being reviewed.

Also, i think they were looking to see if it deflected off the defender in any way before hitting Alli. It did look like it might have just caught the defenders shoulder first before hitting Alli....so were are down to stupid tiny margins which take an age to review and if there is doubt and takes that long to assess, surely this is proof enough that it is not clear and obvious.

var has made a bad situation worse.
i would much rather have a refs bad decision real time then to have the game delayed by var and still get it wrong.
offsides wrong, handballs wrong and we sit waiting like its some plodding north american sport.
goal celebrations aren't even the same. hate it, get rid.

Yeah. Before VAR it would not have been given as the ref didn't blow for it.

VAR is presenting the opportunity to correct this but still they can't. Why?

But that's the point, it was missed by the ref, it doesn't matter if it was missed by fans or players didn't appeal. When the opportunity presented itself to correct it, it wasn't corrected.

You have to ask why?

A 10 year old could do it.

As a result, VAR is getting a lot of criticism 🤔🤔🤔

its fine just fans and pundits getting worked up to a frenzy over every decision that's spoiling it

This goes to the heart of my issue with it.

No one saw it. If play had gone on, no one would have been bothered, the ebb and flow of the game continues and may be later on if a replay is shown there's emotions either way about what happened (just as there are now but without all the VAR bollox)

Compare that to what happened.

The balance is between getting the decision 100% right vs the enjoyment of the game.

The latter is suffering because every decision being assessed is being done so at great length to get it 100% right. No point having replays if its guess work. Was there a deflection off the defender first? may be, may be not. VAR must have ruled enough doubt to not enable a 100% conclusion. That must be the reasoning because no debate it hit his arm .

Problem is we dont know what is being considered. If this was rugby it would be as follows, with ref chatting to TMO.

Ref - I saw nothing, but we are checking for a clear handball

TMO - I'll show you these replays and it clearly hits his hand, but not sure if it first deflected off the defender to any degree, looks like to might have.

Ref/TMO - It might have come off the defender first, there's some doubt, its not 100% clear so favour goes with the on-field decision. No handball. Play on. If the pen had been given by the ref at the time then under review, with some doubt, the on field decision would have stayed.

All this should be heard and seen, so at least we know whats happening, the decision is explained and fans can understand the reasoning, even if you don't agree. Currently no one knows whats being considered or discussed, the reasoning and therefore will never understand the decision.

and what was the Son red?

That didnt seem to follow any sort of refereeing or VAR protocol.

He saw the injury and

or

he and was told by VAR to

either way, wrong application of the laws of the game.

Scrap the way its done now and implement the way its done in Union big screen and all with refs call being final. Players and managers to keep at least 10 yards away while the decision is being made.
