what stood out for me was the passing
in the past we have struggled to string together more than 3 passes when we are not passing back or between the defenders.
McT was really good
i have been fred's biggest crititic and for a long time felt I could do a better job in midfield. Yesterday, I saw why he picks up in a week more than I do in a year. Hopefully, he has many more days like yesterday.
First game I’ve seen Fred look like a proper player. Think you benefited a bit from a Jose identity crisis. He wants to play a more open attacking Spurs type game, but he’s not really sure how.
Yeah. Really pleased for Fred. Knew there was / is a player in there
Decent summary Dunc.
I don’t agree with you on the short goalkicks though. Statistically, you’re much more likely not only to retain possession from short kicks, you’re also more likely to create a attempt on goal in the following phase of play when building from the back.
We saw twice that I remember yesterday the backline draw Spurs up the pitch to then work an out ball via a wing back to McT/Fred to launch an attack. Not only does it create space for your CMs to work in, it creates space for your supporting line to drop into, and we saw Lingard, like the midfield, with far too much room to work in yesterday.
I didn’t get Spurs’ approach at all. At times they seemed to work some kind of quarter-arsssed press up top which basically just pulled them apart. If you aren’t going to hunt for the ball at all, at least stay a bit more compact and get closer to players through the transition. They did neither, and McT, Fred and Lingard had a field day between the lines.

AWB isn't the best at going forward in terms of end product but if he gets up and down the pitch to create some space for our right sided forward that could be something he could do that would greatly benefit the team. He'll never be a TAA going forward of course but he could still prove useful with his energy. Perhaps that'll come.
Another thing he could do is maybe play at LB (although I do like Williams there) and play Dalot at RB. As AWB strength is defending maybe the switch wouldn't affect him that much?
All in all though last night was a good solid performance. More of the same please now going forward.
Was a really enjoyable watch. Another good showing against the so called bigger sides. Saturday will be a tough ask, but feel a bit better going into that game.

Agreed, though I'm not convinced he'll get much better going forward, you either have it or don't.
It's important to have quality fullbacks, Liverpool would be nowhere near as good without Robertson and TAA.
Shaw will never come close to those two, and Awb doesn't look likely either, both are good defenders though. Williams looks promising.

Gary Neville got better at it during his career but I think he worked really hard on it as well. Having a presence there from full back would at least create space though.
Our creativity doesn't have to come through the full backs though as long as they defend well. It can come from elsewhere. Not everyone will have a TAA and Robertson.
Was a very good game from us... Direct, good passing, lots of goal threat, controlled the midfield, solid defence.
Still earlyish days for McT, but we could have the real deal on our hands here. Future captain if he carries on like this. Has a hell of a lot to his game, really great to see.

True, Neville did get better, but he was still pretty limited going forward, adequate and had a good cross, but overall he was a good fullback when all put together.
I just don't really see Awb getting much better in that regard, though it may not matter all that much depending on how we play.
As long as AWB can defend properly and we don't depend too much on our full backs for our creativity we'll be fine. I do think though that his energy down that side could be utilised going forward too if we do it right.

There’s no way he’s going to a midfield three unless we see a couple of injuries up top and he has to use the diamond.
I think the only way you get the best out of Pogba is left of a midfield 3 and pushed a little higher.
I don't think he is effective in a midfield 2 or as an out and out #10.
