It was funny on Saturday when they zoomed in on Ole and McKenna having a discussion. Ole definitely gave him the evil eye. Ole might as well have started shaking his head at the end. If it was a test then McKenna failed it.

Interesting. If true I hope we get to where they want us to be. However, “He does very specific patterns of play, but the first-team currently lack players to do it”...

One might think it a good idea to implement a system that works based on the players you DO have available!

Our fullbacks are not dynamic at all.

Not many managers work this way, especially in the modern era.

That would probably work in the short term. There are some who will adapt (most are young enough) then you replace the ones who don't over time. That's seems to be the more sustainable plan - even if we sacrifice some short term success.

Jon, I the comments were made in the summer. At that time none of us saw McTominay becoming integral to the side or that Fred would improve. Nor did we anticipate James being as good and adapting to the PL as quickly as he's done. Players improve and decline, so you always got to adapt or have an idea and have players that fit the system (either they get coached and adapt or bring in players that do).

Baz, I addressed that point in the OP. Our first choice FBs are better defensively. They can do more in attack and I have more hope for AWB adding that to his game than Shaw. I think Williams is better in this sense than either of them. These days FBs work as auxiliary wingers with many better in the attacking sense than they are at defending. I prefer FBs to be balanced.

Fred is schite.

So he's the mastermind behind the last 18 months and the man responsible for the signing of Fred?

Not exactly a ringing endorsement I have to say

He's the coach, not the manager.

"and an all-around forward who presses"... And he thought this was Martial 🤣...

It seems that they have opted for using the #10 as the press instead if the #9. It would explain the use of Andreas and Lingard, and also why Pogba isnt used there.

Sounds like Chillwell could be the player McKenna wants at LB.

Problem is getting rinsed out of a lot of money from Leicester again and whether Chillwell wants to gamble a potential CL spot.

I think Williams has shown enough that we dont need to splash on a new LB. More minutes this season should set him up nicely to be a regular starter next season.

Ffs I said at the time we'd be better off with Robertson than shaw, and for a fraction of the price. Why couldn't our scouts see this?

Robertson was the one that got away ffs.

He was FPL's best 4m defender for Hull that one year. Surely one of the scouts play FPL??!

Williams verdict is still out for me.

I like his attacking output and tenacity. I also do think his inexperience is his downfall right now.

Also, are inverted fullbacks a thing nowadays? I think that's gonna be a knock against him if he cannot stretch the pitch with overlapping runs

While he's right footed, he's got a good left foot. Besides, our best FB was Irwin imo and he played at LB while being right footed.

Martial still can turn out to be that player. He knows how to press and we've seen that in games this season. Still has few levels to go though.

Slightly different though. Irwin always played with a genuine winger in front of him, mostly Giggs.

In this day and age of inverted and roaming wingers I do prefer a left footed left back.

I understand that bloodred, though Williams is good with good left foot. He can cut in or go wide. Though that's based on the little I've seen of him and what I've read any him.
