Still needs to work on his attacking play, but defensively he has been exceptional

Hmm. His tackling and 1v1 play is no doubt exceptional. That's only a part of defending though. I dont think positionally he's great yet. That will improve in time, but the attacking side of his game also needs a hell of a lot of work.

Think I'm the only United fan not totally convinced by him yet.

Have to ask why he has to make so many last ditch tackles.

Some yesterday were very good. But prefer my defenders to not be along these.

You are not. I would really like to see more in attack from him. He was a winger at youth level so he should really have more.

Don't get me wrong I think he's probably amongst the best defensive full back around, but I think a club like United need better attacking full backs

He should be told to pick an attacking style and work on it, let his forwards know from the off so they know what to expect. What do you think hes more suited to, sticking crosses in, take ons/dribbling, cutting in and finding a pass?

Last ditch tackles look good etc and fans see that as great defending but the best defenders avoid these situations as they add risk and are smart to prevent the need for it. It’s more subtle and doesn’t catch the eye like a great tackle but it’s too top defending.

But regardless his attacking play needs to become a lot, lot better as currently it’s rubbish. It’s mid table standard
----------------------------------------------------------------------
thats bullshiiiiiiiit.

he gets very little help defensively from whoever is playing in front of him and is often left 2 on one.

that whole "great defenders avoid this comment" is just rubbish.

it doesnt matter how the defender does it as long as the results are right and at the minute AWB is doing it right defensively at least, he waits until the right moment and executes his tackles very well.

tbh you dont have to be great, just have an engine, even if you're sheite your runs still have to be tracked see it with Hendo all the time. creates space for others, causes panic and confusion etc and if you're used just find a pass to somebody else.

Who said they were last ditch tackles? Most of them have been when an opponent has been trying to dribble past him. He has made a few last ditch ones, but every FB is going to have to make them at some time of they are asked to get forwards. Sometimes he is going to be on the overlap and a teammate will lose the ball, meaning he has to get back and make a tackle. I'd be more worried if he was playing CB and having to make a lot of last ditch tackles (ala Carra).

Yes, he certainly needs to work on his attacking play. Some of his crossing yesterday was poor. That said, we do have a more attacking option in Dalot.

A lot of his tackles actually look like 'last ditch' ones because he is making tackles from angles most fullbacks wouldn't even attempt. Wingers usually have the upper hand because they know they can easily draw a foul, he manages to stick a leg in and win the ball from positions where most defenders would simply be jockying the player to force them a certain way, or toward another defender, or fouling them. It really is an art the way he manages to win the ball in these positions.

We really struggle with attacking play from full backs. Dalot looks promising. As does the new kid Brandon Williams. Shaw is a bit meh.

"His timing is exceptional. Even when he is making those tackles in the box I don't feel worried that he is going to give a penalty away."

Agree with this, Richarlison looked depressed every time he came up against him yesterday.

I'm sure others have pointed out, his attacking ability is a huge concern, as is Shaws. Yesterday we needed Rashford and James to hold their width tbh as the full backs were isolated every time and they simply can't beat a man or put a cross in.

All the tackles he makes aren't last ditch like some people seem to be saying. He wins the ball in positions others wouldn't, not always to do with reading the game.

A bit of a misconception. Most of his tackles were one on one or recovering from other people.

The only real issue I've noticed with his defending is positioning at the back post when defending crosses.

I’m not sure where this “last ditch” theory has suddenly sprung from either. A last ditch tackle is when your out of position, sometimes sprinting back, and only just get a toe on the ball. AWB seems to be perfectly in control of his slide tackles , they’re not desperate lunges or anything.

Coming up against players with a bit more experience and ability to go down than say DCL or Richarlison and comma ref then he will come unstuck.
