I’m in two minds about Pochettino. I thought his Spurs side really looked like they were going places circa 2016/17 but never fully built on it and started to fade before they’d really done anything.

I won’t be surprised if he’s in the Old Trafford dugout in August though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
500 days without signings will do that to a side
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Didn’t realise it was as long as 500 days. Mental.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

How many windows?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I’m assuming the winter window of 2018 where they signed Lucas Moura was the last signing until summer 2019
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Obviously not very good but “500 days” makes it sound like every single day brought the promise of a new signing, only for those hopes to be repeatedly crushed at eventide.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

That is basically the life of a Spurs fan I’d imagine
----------------------------------------------------------------------

“500 Days” sounds like a half-decent film. Pochettino lurching through the desert in search of water.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

And then he bottles it

😂

It might have had something to do with them leaving White Hart Lane and having to play at Wembley for almost two seasons. And Levy pulling the plug with money.

Yesterday there was a list of the top 50 ‘net spend’ sides in Europe since 2015. Spurs were 32nd.

And they still made a CL final
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Poch got to spend plenty. In fact his big money signings largely failed.

Were they actually his or Levy's big money signings though?

Not really big money in today's game and the thing that is usually forgotten is the disparity in wages.

Ultimately, Poch had to operate on a much tighter budget than Klopp, Pep etc. and that is a credible reason why they did not go further than they did.

He did a fantastic job.

Could they have gone further with more investment? Impossible to say, but I expect we'll see Poch given a chance to prove himself at a bigger club at some stage.

Sanchez was the only bad, clearly poch-driven big money signing we made

posted on 24/1/20

Sanchez - £65k per week

Laporte - £120k per week
VVD - £180k per week
Maguire - £190k per week

When you look at it like this, was he a bad signing?

posted on 24/1/20

He's still a poor player who cost a large transfer fee so yes.

Yeah, although he might still go on to be a top defender. It does raise the question of whether Poch can get things right when he has big money to spend and pressures on him to deliver are increased, as they would be at United. The lack of expectancy and lack of big spending with us probably suited him to a degree, at least at first.

I don't entirely agree - I think he's a reasonable player and I think he's probably on par for what you'd expect from those sorts of wages.

Appreciate the fee was quite high but I just think that until Spurs are prepared to go out and pay the sorts of money that other big clubs pay on wages, they will always be choosing from a pool of players where it's harder to get it right.

Think Ndombele and Lo Celso will go a long way to prove he can identify the type of players who fit what he wants, they're both perfect poch players

The sanchez signing was so weird in part because he didn't fit what we had come to expect from a poch defender, what with being an embarrassment on the ball and all

It's the same with any manager, they will get signings wrong occasionally but will also make good ones. Clearly Poch isn't stupid, he knew what our squad needed at the time and GLC and Ndombele look like they'll be quality additions.

It's not really any different from Pep going for Stones who hasn't exactly lived up to the hype.

I think in hindsight poch wanted a specialist 3rd CB who had the kind of pace cover the space we left behind us, having 2 CBs next to him who could be responsible for building out from the back

Its just having Sanchez be required to participate in build up play after we went back to a back 4 that his flaws were on full display
