This is shambolic.
I'm all for rebuilding and being patient but jesus wept, those boys need some support out there.
It's been obvious from Ole's recent interviews that he doesn't expect transfers now. It's gone from bullish optimism to "January isn't a proper window." It doesn't make his job any easier. And if this comes to fruition, which I fully expect, it does extinguish any limited CL hopes we may have been harbouring imo
"The club are conscious that overpaying for Bruno could lead to selling clubs inflating the price of players in the summer."

Were they not conscious of this with McGuire?

Erm, I think this ship has sailed?
Normally I would find be surprised if a club spent an entire window negotiating for a player and not get him. Not with us.
I think they're trying to stop the trend of overpaying sooner rather than later. It could affect us in summer, however we need these players.

Thing is though clubs will also up their price when they know we're desperate.
If we slump to a mid table finish we'll also be paying extortionate amounts.

Could mean a few things
1) The club are saving money for a potential new manager in the summer
2) The likes of Ed and co haven’t done their job properly and started to work on new players since September in readiness for an early January purchase like Liverpool have done
3) Sporting have seen us as desperate mugs and inflated the price of their star player just so we pay up but it’s the ultimate game of brinksmanship between the two clubs - they probably saw what we did with Maguire and paid up anyway.
You want the club to overpay for Bruno but then isn't stuff like this exactly what has got you into trouble as well... Di Maria/ Sanchez/ Mkhitaryan and so forth

How are they the same?
ADM never wanted to play for us. Bruno apparently does.
Sanchez’ form had fallen off a cliff. Bruno is playing at his peak.
Mykhitaryan just never fit in to the PL but we don’t know if Bruno will.
Does this include the 16 year old kid, Bellingham, from Birmingham City that we have reportedly offered 30 million for

Reportedly. We reportedly offered that a week ago. No need yet though. Strange
Sanchez was still great at Arsenal before he joined United. Bruno may be at his peak but also in the Portuguese League which is far easier than Premier League. Look at the likes of Fred too who did much better in the Ukrainian league.
Not suggesting you don't go for Bruno but a throwing any money at it attitude is what gets you in trouble and players in your books who are too expensive to move on if failing.

It all really depends
If the original price quoted was say, £45 million and they suddenly said £80 million or no deal of course I’d be walking away.
But if they raised the price to £55 million and saw that we were desperate - and we actually were desperate as we are now and that offset of the cost would be made up by reaching the CL because of the signing I’d be more willing to negotiate as close to that cost as possible. At least try and make up the gap with realistic performance related bonuses for the selling club.

That's not true. His form had dipped a lot. However, many were putting that down to his being a "want-away" as opposed to a structural loss of form.

Good for Ed not being taken for a mug! We don’t want other clubs to think we over pay for players and are stupid. We can pay Sporting the £68m they want in the summer where he will be closer to the valuation.

😹we’ll probably pay £80 million while signing Lingard to a new 5 year deal
Inexcusable. I agree we shouldn't be held to ransom over fees but refusing to pay the extra 5-10m for Fernandes when we so desperately need him is a joke.
Clearly those at the top care more about the club's share price and bottom line than what happens on the pitch.

They don't seem to realise that the two are linked, to a certain extent. Maybe the penny will drop (excuse the pun) when Liverpool and City overtake us financially next year
