Our rivals probably wouldn’t cope either. Even City have struggled this season due to injuries to Sane and Laporte.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Injuries have deffo not helped but there’s no excuse for Ole to not have even the tiniest hint of a style of play with the squad he has.
No matter who is on the pitch there’s no excuse for a lack of urgency and lack of risk. That is something that most decent managers can coach into a squad within weeks
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’m absolutely amazed when I read this.
Of course we have a style of play. It’s actually very, very clearly defined. We aren’t one-dimensional, but we’re very two dimensional.
Do you actually mean you don’t *like* our style of play?
Or are you telling me that you honestly don’t see what the side is trying to do and how when it goes out on the pitch?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don’t.
Unless you see something more than our deeper midfield players constantly limping balls forward to our 9 and seeing their defenders intercept it or if you see our full backs running forward and then stopping and passing it back to our #6 etc
What is Ole’s style of play than he is trying to mould this side into? Enquiring minds want to know. Because if it is what we are seeing which is players moving the all around slowly and an all round lack of urgency then it’s amazing and he should stay for decades (sarcasm smiley)
Yesterday it made me laugh seeing Bruno shout at Lingard for making runs in the complete opposite direction of where he should have been going,
Yeah and a few wins and they’ll be on Chelsea’s coattails. Shows how bad the league is this season. And many of these teams have been below us most of the season despite our injuries, while they’ve not lost players of similar importance to their attack.
It’s why I have some sympathy for Ole. If we’d not lost the important players we have, for as long as we have, we’d have been sitting in fourth I reckon.

He already used up all his luck with Chelsea not being able to buy players.
And Chelsea also stupidly sacked Sarri and went for Frank Solskjaer
I advocated his signing but as something of a wild card low risk signing to be introduced gradually. I do think he's been overplayed as well but, to balance that, it's better to overplay him than the more talented Greenwood. Don't want him to suffer burn out as I think he could be special for us
Like a lot of our players I feel he'd do better in a team that's playing better football and getting better results. Like has been mentioned several times on here it seems we have a squad full of squad players where what we really need in the next window is 3 or 4 players to go straight into the starting XI.
Felt bad for Sarri. Thought he did okay with Chelsea for the most part

What has that got to do with a style of play?
Depending on the opposition, we set up either to play:
- A possession-based game with a purposeful transition always passing out from the back.
Transitions have two forms. Either, and more frequently against a high press, a quick, more direct transition from the defence when the opportunity presents or one of the DMs looking for a runner in behind with the opposition drawn up the pitch, or if this isn’t possible or doesn’t materialise, controlled (but still positive) progression to the final third.
Two, three touches maximum, crisp passing, lots of movement in the midfield. Latterly, the number ten is allowed to come deeper to help work the ball up the pitch (although I’m pretty convinced Ole isn’t delighted about that).
In the final third, the ball is patiently recycled across the pitch through the DMs to try to pull the opposition out, with a reliance on the FBs to create width and try for overloading situations, and movement from the four attacking players to find gaps along the edge of the box.
It is supposed to see slick passing, intelligent movement and direct play.
This is how Ole has said he wants us to be playing (see his comments after the Partizan game), but he just doesn’t have the players for it.
When the ball is lost, depending on the opposition and game, there’s usually either a hard press or a controlled press in the final third.
Or:
- A direct counterattacking game featuring a deep defensive line with usually two banks of four using zonal marking and a controlled press becoming active when the ball enters (more or less) our defensive third.
Two players are usually available as out balls, and the aim is to hit them quickly with balls into feet (usually the out ball) or into the wide channels. Usually this will be two of Martial, Rashford and James, and they will try to station themselves between one of the opposition CBs and the respective FB.
Early passes through the transition are encouraged. High risk passes are fine as long as they are quick and direct. The pace of the three forwards is supposed to provide the opportunity at some point in the attack to get in behind in one area of the pitch, which is why rather than seeing James and Rashford always carrying the ball and taking their man on you’ll see them hit an early diagonal looking for their opposite number.
In short, we’re semi-active. We basically have two modes of play, and will deploy a very close version of one or the other depending on the opposition.
Just to add one more thing to that: I think Ole would prefer it if we could be more active; i.e. to dictate terms and use the first approach in more games.
He’s as good as said that. And I think if he had (or gets) the right players and some time, we’d be seeing more of that.
He seems a player who is literally a pace merchant. He has the easiest game to play against for defender now they have worked him out.
