Not baffling to me, I don't think it was a red.
I can understand why some people do and ultimately it's a matter of opinion - but you can't categorically state that the referee was wrong.

By letter of the law it was a yellow and both the on-field ref and VAR-ref thought that.

Don't actually agree with this - I think it falls into an area where both opinions are valid.
On that basis, I think the VAR wouldn't have overruled the decision if the ref had sent him off either.
Baffling to me either way. I'm open for debate on many topics, but struggle big time how that was not a red. Awful tackle that could have broke another players ankle. Alli maybe benefitted that sterling is not the most powerful or heaviest of players.
Oh well don't matter now.
what is the letter of the law? If you could send me a link to where it says it is a yellow?
I thought dangerous play was a red.

I posted it on Page 1 of the thread.
For me it fell under the category of a reckless challenge which showed no regard for the potential danger or safety to the opponent, which is a yellow card.
For it to be a red card it had to be excessive use of force, which I don't think it was.

It comes down to whether you think he used excessive force.
I personally think that he made a normal challenge - his leg movement was in line with what you'd expect from someone trying to win the ball. He wasn't 'going in hard'.
He just mistimed it.
Each to their own but can see the argument for either way myself.

I think it's just about a yellow, not a red. Sterling is going for the ball, is late and the follow through of the attempted kick catches Alli's ankle/shin full on. I seem to remember a Spurs player with a similar challenge in a recent match, maybe Tanganga vs Liverpool, cant quite remember.
Biggest problem for me is, Alli jumps out of enough tackles as it is. Dont think he'll ever go in to another 50:50 again
