What Wenger suggests changes nothing. Can't believe he said that to be honest. Someone on here said it already, the only part you cannot score with is your hands.

You can even score with your diiiick. Are they going to check for bulges sticking past the defender now.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In the case of Wengers new rules, this makes no sense.

how do they know the exact moment the ball leaves the passers foot, how many mm accurate can they get it
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's the hard part, no matter what the rules are with the lines being drawn etc.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Think we need some lines on the screen...

'You will be not offside if any part of the body that can score a goal is in line with the last defender, even if other parts of the attacker's body are in front.

'That will sort it out and you will no longer have decisions about millimetres and a fraction of the attacker being in front of the defensive line.'

Nothing changes, the only part that doesnt count for offside is the hand. So I just cracked a joke that if your diiiick is past the defender, you are still offside. Thus nothing changes.

It was best when they let Stevie Wonder draw the lines on the screens for Matas disallowed goal for us.

Yeah against Huddersfield, when you look at the image now you think it's fake, like when people mock up those fake heat maps as a joke/meme.

This thread sums it up... No more or less goals will be ruled offside by VAR... literally just moving the millimetre line

I would use the daylight/floodlight theory. If you can see light between the attacker and the defender its offside.

Slightly advantageous to the attacker, but could only result in more goals or tackles if anything. Thus making the game more exciting.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It will probably result in less goals because defencive lines will be played deeper because the strikers have such an advantage.

They'll still have to get their lines out. It will only ever change if you have some sort of technology like the goal line technology, that tells you definitively whether someone is offside or not.

Nah .......

....... there is a much simpler solution.

There is too many subjective/objective elements in sport. Just get rid of the 'offside' rule full stop. It is a ridiculous inclusion (and intrusion) in the game.

'Goal hanging' was part of what made backstreet/playground football exciting and fun.

We need hawkeye or similar for offside, it cannot be relied upon a man in a room drawing lines, rushing etc

That would just be carnage for modern day formations and tactics. I'm sure it would open up a possibility of new ones, but the transition could be messy and hilarious.

Just have rid of VAR, ffs.

The game wasn’t broken. It wasn’t inherently unfair. It wasn’t in desperate need of reform.

We’ve experimented with it. We’ve tried different approaches, and all it has done is turned the debate from the game to the technology. It hasn’t taken the heat off officials, and it doesn’t seem to me to feel to anybody that it has really improved the spectacle of the game. If anything it has created so many of its own issues that we can’t stop talking about it.

There were, and are, far more important things to fix in football.

You do realise that if we get rid of VAR we'll have to wipe the season that we used it out of the record books. Is that what you want? Is it?

This.

The simplest solution as I see it is just to get rid of the lines on the replay and leave it to the human eye. Offside replays before VAR always seemed pretty clear cut.

If they had done that on Monday for example, and allowed Giroud's goal to stand, not a single person wouldve batted an eyelid.

In my opinion there are two options.

1) You leave it as it is, you are either offside or onside based on the technology used today (this can be refined for accuracy). Its consistent and is supportive of the fact the offside rule is meant to be objective.

2) You let the linesman and referees call offside as they did before VAR. Then if there is a clear and obvious error (based on a set unit of length e.g. 1/2 yard, 1/2 metre) then VAR can overrule the decision. This needs refinement but it would be based on 'Umpires call' for LBW decisions in cricket. It uses technology effectively whilst giving leeway to the referees and also improves the flow of the game.

There is a problem here as linesman could call offside for players who are onside, but they should be encouraged to give the benefit of doubt to the attacker (as they were before).

Surely it’s better for the game if players are allowed to be 99% onside instead of 1% off.

posted on 19/2/20

Not really. It would increase the amount of VAR interference as well. It’s easier for everyone, linesman and assistant refs, to judge whether a player is offside with the current law.

posted on 19/2/20

Wengers rule would make it far too easy for attackers imo, especially on set pieces. Would be ridiculous how far 'offside' (as we currently know it) you'd be allowed to stand as long as you left a trailing leg. Players like Crouch would be fckin miles in front

posted on 19/2/20

Fellaini would love it.

Think about how much it would benefit Ronaldo as well. He’d be allowed an extra full stride and still be on. Which for a player like him is a huge advantage.
