Liverpool play with two fullbacks, who are two of the best in they world, certainly from an attacking point of view. They are not wingbacks. Their roles are not those of wingbacks.

Thursday night we played with three centrebacks, and two wingbacks.

All of that is pretty clear, and entirely uncontroversial.

I have no idea what anyone who thinks otherwise to this was watching.

Robertson and Alexander-Arnold are no wingbacks? Thanks for the big laugh. I guess lying to yourself gives a big comfort.

They would make very good wingbacks, but they are certainly not playing that role right now.

What some pool fan thinks is of little consequences... What is more interesting is the way certain utd fans sided to his strange view, simply because it fit a certain agenda.

yes, because a fan of the opposite team can only lie and have a below average IQ, right? This is what you resort to, to validate tribalism? It's quite sad.

No they are not are they. I don’t think this person watches Liverpool.

I don’t watch them that often but I haven’t seen them play with wing backs under Klopp in any of the games I have seen.

I see I've reached troll-water now. The waves of nonsensical drivel doesn't put out the wind in my sail, rather avoid the volley of folly.

It's one thing to troll, but if a simple concept like wingback can't be acknowledged then your ship has already sunk as have any arguments.

'Alexander Arnold and Robertson are no wingbacks' I guess their heatmaps must be a lie or a fabircation. Oh please drop this meme on redcafe.

Don’t you think it’s kinda funny that nobody in the football world refers to them or their roles as fullbacks?

Journalists? Pundits? Klopp?

Robb, are you arguing that TAA and Robertson are wingbacks, or that their roles are those of wingbacks?

posted on 21/2/20

Depends what you expected him to be and surely his cost has to play a part in that.

Do I think he’s been worth his fee, absolutely not. Do I think he’s been as good as he could, pretty much as I’ve never really rated him that highly. Do I think he is good enough for us, not if we want to challenge for titles any time soon but good enough to be fighting for top 4.

He’s has a fairly decent spell recently but so far I’d rate him a 6/10, he hasn’t been helped much with the defence around him but equally he was never going to be able to justify his fee (which wasn’t his fault).

Ultimately there’s no real difference is there?

If TAA and Robertson spend most of the time in the opposition half and act as one of Liverpool’s main creative outlets than whatever you want to call them they are playing as wingbacks

The world is lazy with it's terminology and don't feel the need to be accurate. To me a fullback is more defensive minded and positions themselves near the cb's and can go forward. But in the case of Liverpool, both fullbacks are mostly found in the midfield or higher up.

Inherently they embody the term of wingback. What you people don't understand is that Liverpool plays with 2 cb's who move high up and that one of the midfielders slot in between the cb's. Usually it's Henderson, making it a 3-5-2 or 2-6-3/2-4-6 against weaker oppositions. When the defending occurs it resorts to a 4-4-2.

The heatmaps of both fullbacks clearly show that they're 'playing as' wingbacks and not as fullbacks. But the above details are usually too much to consider when making a simple interview or article.

So, answer the question... do Liverpool play with two wingbacks?

Just to give the latest example, here is a heatmap of both Liverpool 'fullbacks' against Athletico. The Reds are attacking the left side:

Fullbacks when defending deep in their own half will drop in line with the centre backs, wingbacks won't.

This is false statement. I remember Ashley Young defending deep as a fullback and clearly saw a back 5 at times when United needed to defend.

It also wouldn't make sense to ignore defending the space behind you as a wingback since they occupy the same position as fullbacks when defending. Wingbacks operate the entire sides and are usually more apt in attacking than defending, just like Andy and Trend.

I have more bad news for you United supporters.

Your beloved football club would actually be 11th in the league without VAR. That's 4 positions lower than your current standing. Sucks huh!
