True, but it does seem like Sporting were willing to let him go in the summer and for less that we ended up paying. If Ole feels so strongly about him then it is odd that things changed so drastically in 6 months when it was quite clear a player of his quality was needed and he would have most likley make a big difference for us in the first half of the season. We shouldn't ignore that and look into why it happened, because personally I don't accept that the club felt he changed that much in 6 months that we went from not being interested to being desperate to get him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe the developing saga with Pogba impacted on the decision? Perhaps even Gomes failure to sign a new deal/emerge?

I would imagine this was the most likely situation. I don't think Bruno was brought into to play with Pogba, he's his replacement as our creative midfielder.

Bruno isn't a replacement to Pogba. Ole was persisting with Pogba in a deeper midfield position (rightly or wrongly) and Bruno has been positioned as a #10.

I think Ole sees them both in the same team.

I think that's the right track though... Probably wanted to see how Gomes, Lingard and Periera got on

Maybe the move to 3 man backline also played a part.

Another option with Bruno and Pogba is something like this

Martial---------------------------------Rashford

----------------------Bruno

Fred---------------Pogba----------------McTominay/Matic/New Signing

The like for like position maybe be different, but Pogba was our creative hub, it's now Bruno.

From what I have seen so far, Bruno adopts the # 10 role when we are attacking, but drops deeper to fill the third midfield role when we are defending.

There was one time yesterday where he mopped up from behind Shaw.

That makes more sense to me.

I do like his work ethic. He looks like a very good signing so far.

But wouldn’t the fact we tried to get both Eriksen and Dybala in the summer suggest Ole and the club did want a #10 while also thinking Bruno wasn’t right (for whatever reason)?

We’ll never know the what happens behind closed doors but that doesn’t mean we can’t raise questions. If that were the case most of the points discussed here would be pointless.

"We have got the number 10 position nailed down now. He is a big piece of what we are trying to put together."

--------------------------------------------

That doesn't sound too promising.

If he's sticking with that, then it's better we just let Pogba go in the summer, forget about signing Grealish or Maddison and focus on bringing in a player capable of playing deeper in midfield.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yep; been saying this all season.

Agreed.

Although I would still go for Grealish as well, especially if Villa go down.

That was, and will be I think, the exception to the rule.

If you look at his heat map from yesterday, he was our most advanced player barring Martial very comfortably.

Based on the heat map, we actually looked like this yesterday, and I think by and large it’s how we’ll continue (albeit with different players):

————Fred——Matic
Greenwood—————James
——————Bruno
——————-Tony

Meant to add that although we’ll be using Bruno’s energy, agility and ability to steal possession, I think we’ll (start to) see that being used to lead the press rather than scurry about deep in the midfield.

A quality CDM and a right winger in the summer would make a hell of a difference to us. Grealish would be useful as an addition to those two prioirities but not at silly prices. I would like to see Gomes given a bit more game-time and see if he can in fact hack it and cover for Bruno as the Number 10 next season.

I wouldn't say that was necessarily Ed's fault this time, more the people at the club who are there to scout and assess targets.

I'm about to blow you guys mind. How about we have 2 attacking midfielders??? One who can play on the left when we have rashford injured (like he is now) or together with Fernandez with a solid def midfielder.

Grealish is a must buy for me at this point in time. He is going to be a generational talent for England. We can find space for him.

It is our manager you need to convince. Most on here think we should play 4-3-3 or a 4-1-2-3 if you prefer.

And if Bruno gets injured we become this uncreative pile of poo because we can only have one attacking midfielder. Even if he is rigid with his formation, grealish's versatility makes him useful to this team.

The 2 players behind a #10 don’t have to both be defensive though. You could have a more defensive minded midfielder alongside a deep lying creative one.
