I won’t knock Cole here because he was superb.
What I will always find odd is that he often had Ronaldo in his pocket but Valencia frequently made him look like a mug. Go figure.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd agree with that. Different era though. Defenders were expected to prioritise defending in Irwin's day.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
of course you would.
As it stands coles athleticism and willingness to go forward, especially at arsenal and early chelsea days were massive. cole better going forward for me
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Think Cole was a better defender and similar levels going forward, although Irwin was mostly playing on the left whilst being right footed, you have to be a good footballer to do that.

It was strange. He seemed able to contend with Ronaldo's tricks and skills but Valencia's raw running power seemed to catch him out several times.
Did Ronaldo coincide with prime Cole and Valencia when he was starting to descend from his imperious best? (To be honest I'm struggling to put the chronologies together.)

I think a bit of a myth built up around Cole handling Ronaldo based off of one incredible Cole performance v Ronaldo for Chelsea at OT - remember the pundits on MOTD (Wright, Dixon and possibly Shearer) waxing lyrical about it and I think that's what sticks in a lot of people's minds. I remember at least two occasions where Ronaldo sat Cole down and had great games against him.

Wan-Bissaka would be lucky to make the top 5 English RBs for goodness sake.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Who would be ahead of him then?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Trent Alexander-Arnold
Kyle Walker
Kieran Trippier
Max Aarons
A fit Nathaniel Clyne

No, it makes your statement ridiculous.

Irwin was excellent going forwards. His crossing with either foot was very good. Could get the to byline and pull it back or swing it in from deep ala Becks. He was a quality player.
Cole could beat a man, Irwin didn't have to.
Irwin will never get the credit he deserves from a lot of people because he was so unassuming that he never had that profile. Way too many football fans forget that he was instrumental in our treble winning side of 99. There are even United fans who forgot or are unaware he was in that XI.
And some Utd fans will overplay his ability too.
