A Simplistic Solution ?? . . . . .

Think this might happen, depends on the longevity of the virus

posted on 13/3/20

thats unworkable as it would bankrupt half the clubs in europe.

If the TV companies have mass cancellations of subscriptions they will have to default on payments to big leagues too.

just a note:

the ryder cup. no big deal. once every 4 years, just move it. its for tv anyway.

football is a week by week affair where gates are largely still the bread and butter.

the cash cow leagues will be in even greater peril if sky and bt have mass subscription cancellations due to no football or any sport for that matter.

I am already looking at mine.

Sky would be particularly wise to say they will suspend subs to stop peoepl cancelling and some just wont resub for the 8 games left.

Trust me if you are a lower league club and are told maybe 6 months time... maybe you'll go under.

So what if the virus takes hold and we can't play games for 8-10 months

We're be in what the OP's suggested situations anyways.

Again this all depends on the longevity of the virus

Doesn't take into account any financial implications, I know
___________
And when you take into account the implications of cancelling a whole seasons fixtures how many clubs will have gone bust?

Players and staff will still need paying, the wages won't just go away. Can't see it - but then if the virus keeps on going, all bets are off..... who knows where we'll be.

Whilst the authorities have obviously taken the correct action in suspending competitions, I think their contingency plans need laying out as soon as possible so that everyone knows where they stand. Sure, things might pick up and we might be able to finish the season without much fuss. But it also may not. They need to make a decision now on what happens if this thing runs into, say, July or August (as many clubs will lose players out of contract by then), so that all clubs know where they stand. Seeing how it pans out first isn't going to cut it.

Simplest thing is just cancel this season, and next seasons European Competitions.

Then start from scratch again next season, whenever that is allowed to start. Simplest and easiest solution.

Try telling that to Liverpool and Leeds fans....

I agree. Wouldn't go down well with fans of some clubs but there is no solution to this, just a choice of which is least undesirable option. I don't think they will want to announce this any time soon but by 4th April everybody will be likely to be more receptive to the inevitability of it.

Extending players contracts by a couple of months will be far easier than cancelling a whole season out.

Suspend this year as at now, and pick up where we leave off when the virus has passed.

Really not possible except for table standings? Would players who are currently injured and who would get additional time to recover be eligible to play? And what about players who are currently fit might, find themselves in the company of infected teammates, and then become sick themselves. Weather issues could also be an issue as the PL darlings struggled to
play in mid-Summer temperatures etc. etc.

Hopefully the football brain-trust and the players association are discussing these issues in advance of the possibility?

The Ryder cup is over in a matter of days. Not a LFL comparison.

Anyone remember the days before the lottery did for the pools? In bad weather if all games postponed the Pools Panel decided the results.

If this season had to be cancelled making it impossible to finish then maybe a panel could decide the results giving all leagues a final standing.

Would be drastic for those relegated but what alternative to write off whole season?

There is no way they are going to cancel this season , it will resume at some point between now and august . If it doesn’t then this virus will have been more impactful than any predictions.

posted on 13/3/20

Solution:

1. complete this season when the time is right.
2. 2020-21 season cancelled. Play mini Leagues like in League of Nations, geographically based
3. Complete the relegations and promotions from 2019-20 season for the start of the 2021-22 season

All players currently with suspended games go and get CV from their mates. They willl get it anyway - they are young and fit and 99.9% will likely have nothing worse than a strong cold or mild flu symptoms

Maybe none of us will be here to worry about it ….

They could say players can't register with another club until the season is completed and don't open the transfer window until it is. So players get the choice of either not playing and not getting paid or extending loan or contract for 6 weeks (which is all that is needed to complete remaining fixtures, less if condensed). Can't see many players turning that down.

Complete the remaining fixtures and then have a shorterned season if needed - lots of ways to do this: no cups, less international breaks, split leagues, just 1 fixture between each club but so every club has equal amount of homes/aways.

If they can move around the domestic season for a winter world cup in Qatar, they can do it for this.

Remember the days when drawn European matches were decided by the toss of a coin. Sounds ridiculous but it could happen again in the EFL and Premier league if this suspension lasts till August as it would be hard to see all the fixtures being fulfilled unless they then start the new season in October. Hopefully things will calm down by April and we can all return to normal but still what a mess!

Why bother with all that though? There is no necessity to do it and it will cause greater disturbance in the long-term. Scrap it and have done. Roll on next season.

only a poor sport hater of liverpool would say something so stupid. the op has it right finish this season whenever and worry about the next season later.

I think I’m right in saying that for the top clubs in the PL, us, the Mancs, the London clubs, they don’t actually need the gate money, they get enough to survive if not thrive on their other commercial interests including tv.

Because it's a sporting competition and we've played 80% of it. Why are seasons that haven't even kicked off yet more important than a season that the majority has been completed?

We can do without the FA cup or Carabao cup for year or with a couple of internationals breaks. Much better than denying teams and fans glory when they are so close to it. Sport would lose all integrity.
