I think that the only way that the season gets finished now is behind closed doors. As the government's plan is to herd immunise, I think that they will allow football to continue behind closed doors. I don't think that they will allow fans to return to games, as although they do want the majority of the population to catch the virus, they want to be able to control the rate that it spreads as much as possible.

If the government decides that they aren't going to let any football happen for the next 4 months, then the season is over and I expect it to be called null and void.

If the approach is herd immunity, you’d expect to see a decent proportion of the players end up with Coronavirus surely.

And although it isn’t killing young people, you can’t train or compete in elite professional sports if you’re infected.

I think the authorities would have to look at the squads across the league and know they were healthy enough, as well as decide it was safe enough for them to perform.

There won’t be any football until at the very earliest the scheduled start of next season IMO.

That was my initial thought too Rosso.

Not so sure now though. I think that maybe it will happen behind closed doors. At least at national level. Wouldn't be surprised if the CL and Europa are cancelled with a view to getting the domestic leagues over the line.

I saw something about the Italian, Spanish and German leagues working together and they will request that the Euros are cancelled tomorrow to give them time to complete their seasons.

There is an article on the BBC about the Italian FA already confirming that this is what they will request.

The priority has to be to get the domestic leagues finished first. The cup and European competitions will have to go on the back burner for now.

Current expert estimates put the UK *peak* in 14 weeks, which would be back end of June.

But when will clubs be able to advise that their playing staff is:

A) Virus-free;
B) Back to health and full fitness and able to play;
C) Safe to play given infections across club staff, ground staff, officials, contractors and other third parties.

Nothing is happening, even behind closed doors, until t the autumn at the earliest.

Uefa announced it is committed to completing European and domestic seasons by 30 June at the latest.

ie the season is over.

Like I said earlier Ziyech is not playing out meaningless games in erisvidsie on 20k a week in July when he has signed to Chelsea on July 1 for 200k

Even if he wanted to, Chelsea could hold him to his contract to show up at the first day of work. Ajax would have little so say.

Never understood why anyone ever thought it wouldn't finish. Far too much money put into it to just abandon it when a restart is easy to manage.

Guarantee right now those few nations that abandoned early are completely and utterly gutted by their stupidity.

Probably won't really be bothered. I've found it difficult to watch without the fans.

If we see a second spike in the coming months, football without fans could go on into next season.

I think football without fans will go into next season no matter what. I will be surprised if we see full grounds before the new year. Maybe half full/ three quarters full and gradually build.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know what the difference is with revenue, between how they are running now compared to normal. I imagine it is lower and I'm not sure it is offset by a big reduction in overheads for clubs.

If we see a second spike here and end up with another season behind closed doors; whilst another nation who cancelled their season handle the crisis better and get fans back in for the most part, then surely they come out of this better. Then there won't really be any regrets about closing down the season.

Obviously, there is more feeding into that than just the football, but the football being back is part of a number of measure the government has eased on which has caused people to let their guards down. We have a tendency to only look at the short term in this country and not really consider the long term effects of our actions.

Fair points tam. Way too early for any nation to think they have got it right, time will tell.
