I'd like to suggest we all go out and buy playstation consoles with FIFA19 (20?) and set up a league amongst ourselves to keep us occupied

I live in a state of permanent isolation and frankly, this site is the only contact I have with the outside world. I just hope you have all been telling the truth..........

Indeed. In the absence of match threads perhaps Admin this could be a live one?

Were all piling up to Lewis to escape the lurgy.

Site should be closed down at once and only brought back online when the football has resumed.

That's a great idea Scouse. I was thinking we must all envy Heb. One of my ideas was to rent a place in the Highlands for a couple of months. The more isolated the better, trouble is of course others would have the same idea thus destroying the isolation.

Could do with a laugh Heb. The future looks so bleak. Just told all my clients that I am no longer doing private tuition. Too risky for me to be in close contact with teenagers, and again not for the reasons you are thinking of.

We still only have 8 confirmed cases here. NZ is about as safe as it gets at the minute.

No but you might be answering my question with another one.

You know it's not a computer virus, right?

Contrary to many other countries we are following the herd immunity approach.
I'd welcome thoughts on whether or not this is the correct approach.
As I understand it the government want to protect the most vulnerable with a series of measures culminating in several months of isolation. This strategy requires the purchase of as many ventilators as possible in preparation for treating the most serious cases and to optimise the maximum amount of people who recover from critical list.
The rest of us are to get it. Indeed it is a vital part of the herd immunity plan that we do get it. Hence no ban on gatherings. It is individual sports, venues etc who are shutting down contrary to advice.
Basic plan. The strong get it, recover build up an immunity and can no longer spread it or contract it. The weaker become exposed in a controlled way with medical beds ready to treat them with the chance of the best outcomes.
It has the advantage of us as a nation getting over this quicker and being able to move round in the world as well as helping the economy.

Most countries are hiding away from it hoping it will die away. This is extremely difficult as keeping the populace from being in any contact with each long enough globally to kill off the virus is problematic.

Which way is right?
Time will tell.

We haven't said that we are officially going for the herd immunity approach, I think we are hoping that there will be an element of that. You could make a case for keeping schools and universities open and suggesting that the fit and younger continue to mingle but keep away from the vulnerable. Ideally, we would test younger and fitter people to find out when they have had the disease and are then safe to visit or look after others. However even the young and fit have an incidence of progression to life-threatening illness, albeit in a small minority. And we don't have anywhere near enough testing kits so we are floundering in that respect, just telling people to self-isolate for a bit if they feel peaky.

What we don't know is what proportion of the population have been infected with no symptoms at all. China's infections have slowed down considerably. This may be because of the action they have taken but it seems a bit strange to me that things have leveled off relatively quickly. If there were lots of people becoming immune with no symptoms then that might explain why the rate of transmission has fallen but perhaps I am being hugely over-optimistic. None of the experts seem to be suggesting that.

Clearly as Hancock is saying not but the experts seem to be championing the herd model and the advice we are currently following certainly isn't the lockdown other countries are enacting, but more likely to bring infection about.

posted on 16/3/20

It's difficult to know which model is best. The Spanish flu epidemic was only stopped by the number of survivors who gained immunity. It killed 60 million but hasn't struck again. The lockdown model risks a second epidemic unless a vaccine is developed.
