Once the government switches off the financial tap (and they will), and testing is readily available I think things will return to a norm quite quickly.

Research, facilities, treatment and the holy grail of a cure are proceeding at a pace never seen before. Day by day now we read about things improving for the future although we still have to hit that "peak" in the sombrero.

Then there will be a massive backlog of work to be done. At that point, yes; you'll find it difficult to get a tradesman.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But will you still employ your butler?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I will employ everyone I possibly can.

We've asked the few people who do stuff for us at home not to come, but I will still pay them. They need that money.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Good Man. And a very impressive gesture.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

They shouldn't suffer in my opinion and I think unfortunately that most of their clients won't pay them.

And they could bloody afford to. Makes my blood boil.

They desperately need the money, It's their income source.

Bit of an assumption that the crisis will be over though the markets currently think so?

My prediction is that it will be a nightmare to get a tradesman for months after.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Maybe not. Many won't be able to afford to get a tradesman in as they budget the next year of their lives

I need them to get into debt.

Also need them to be employed.

As a contractor, I have to admit the firm I'm contracted to have been doing their upmost to find billable work which we could do from home so we continue to get paid.

Although as it stands we're all still in

Came to a similar arrangement as we do if we choose to go on holiday or x-mas etc. It's like paying holiday pay.

Like most domestic help it is cash in hand from us and they do a mix of commercial & private jobs. Now, will they also be claiming from the gov? Is all their work 'put through the books'?

And the big question - if this goes 2,3,4,5,6 months do I keep paying them?

Aye, was at M&S this morning and they were limiting to ~40 customers at a time, one in, one out. Thankfully, I was only held 20s or so. Plenty food on the shelves. Only thing missing was a decent roast beef. Noticed that at all the shops I've been at. Might make a trip to the butchers or Makro but the less contact the better.

What will the world be like? It'll be more authoritarian, with our civil liberties stripped back so we can 'learn lessons' and 'not let this happen again'. We'll have to make hard decisions as a society about how we let the government access information about us, how they control us and how much we're willing to give them.

As for me, I'll be a little bit fatter and even more bored than I am now.
