China was brutal towards people and the west is a libera! democracy, so the Eu, uk and America moved softly and slowly.

We do not weld doors shut or beat peop!e like Chinese cops, but perhaps we should as so many went to footba!!, racing, parks and pubs!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Responses imo have largely been guided by ideological, political and cultural attitudes. Ideological as regards attitudes to freedom; political in terms of expedience, and cultural as in attitudes towards discipline, obedience and, with regard to these to factors, the comparative importance given to socialisation. It's not all that surprising that Italy and Spain are the worst hit countries in Europe. What's somewhat more of a surprise given the political decision-making is that the UK isn't already faring worse than it is.

Dublin let 5k italy rugby fans come to dublin two weekends ago.

America isn’t the epicentre. They are just testing people and releasing true figures unlike the Chinese
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've heard that stated repeatedly (not just by Trump and his acolytes) as if it were fact, but the truth is it's a purely speculative statement.

What we do know is that the WHO has repeatedly commended China on how aggressively they set about tackling the epidemic there, both from the perspective of lockdowns and of mass testing. In fact, the decision to lock Wuhan down was actually contrary to the WHO's own guidelines at the time, was hugely criticized by the Western media, but has since been recognised by the WHO as being crucial in the response.

Wuhan lockdown began on 23 Jan. That day, confirmed cases reported in all of mainland China totalled 830. The entire province of over 50 million was placed on lockdown within a matter of days.

For comparison, NYC lockdown began on 20 March. On that day, the state of NY had reported 8356 confirmed cases. As of the same date, the US on the whole had 17062 confirmed cases.

The US has taken weeks in getting its testing capabilities up to speed, and mass testing in hard-hit areas has taken far longer to implement than in China.

Those are just a couple of known reasons to explain why the outbreak has been better contained in China without resorting to speculation regarding China's transparency on the issue.

Here are several other factors:

Seems what China did is the best way to contain it.

NY is and has been lockdown, but being hit hard.

We should have moved sooner, govt and public!

Russia has two dead!

Is this bad luck in the West too?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Did you actually read the comment I am replying to? NY went in lock down at 8000 cases, China at 800. Speed is required, NY was waaaaaay to late. So not sure what your point is.

Whatever happened, the ECDC (European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control) has facked up royally as well. In January they said that the chance of the virus spreading to Europe was small.

The Dutch equivalent said the chance of the virus coming to the Netherlands was small because there were no direct flights to and from Wuhan.

Surely after Spanish flu, Ebola, SARS and MERS they all should have known better.

Spot on.

Sadly, members of my extended family and colleagues hsve been carrying on as normal, going to Italy and Spain in recent weeks for hols, Cheltenham betting as if all is good and going to the pub in groups and I cannot say Boris or the dup or Trump are to blame, because it is individuals fooking up.

It is not good enough that nurses hsve no kit and tests so that is on trump and bojo...And the rest of the West, but people are using this virus to say if Corbyn was leader, we would be saved too, which is bollox.

Govt can do so much, but not everything, and I am not relying on politicians to guide me.

Would you have been ok with Jan lockdown in the West then, with no travel out if China or from Italy to Dublin or Belfast or London and schools shut after Christmas and self employed on dole etc.??

We would have been in lockdown two months already and looking forward to???

Closing borders is not FOM and how the West works.

Sorry, yes.

Media are saying America is epicentre based on cases, and not adding Europe together, but giving French and German cases, so you are statistically correct.

Perhaps the media want to paint trump in a certain light lol?

Look, its hindsight, but I would have understood if in January all travel from Europe to and from China would have been blocked with exceptions of a controlled manner of repatriating citizens.

That would have definately slowed down the spread and maybe allow for it to be controlled.

I hope next time when someone starts coughing in China and an epidemic starts, we act faster with closing EU borders. We learned that if we dont, we are forced to do it anyway.

If you guys honestly think China’s figures are accurate then you are extremely naive. The population of Wuhan alone is over 1 billion. There’s no way less than 1% of the population has been infected sorry. The numbers clearly aren’t accurate.

No countries numbers are accurate. The UK has only done 100k tests, for example.

Don't we only report confirmed cases? If so they are accurate as far as they go.
I don't believe the Chinese figures at all.

Yes, everybody reports confirmed cases. You can't report cases if they're not confirmed. You can't confirm cases if you aren't testing. The UK aren't testing as much as other countries so stats are likely even more flawed than some others.
