Uefa President: Season could be over

posted on 29/3/20

The rush to make a decision is a financial one, like every business in the UK right now Football Clubs face an existential threat, they will have had very few home games and most seats were paid for a year ago.

With no income, uncertain future TV income, unable to sell Season Tickets for next year, how long do you think they are going to last? Days or weeks
-------
So will they pay back money to the TV companies or what?

Obviously you haven't considered the minutiae of your suggestion.

So your solution is to start selling tickets for a season that night not even happen? How many games will they sell? The season could be shortened. Will clubs then refund money to season ticket holders? So many possibilities. Its honestly an extremely stupid idea. Out of the frying pan into the fire by binding yourself to a season that might not happen.

The sooner this season is cancelled, Clubs can mothballed, make arrangements to furlough staff and the 80% contributions from the Government.
-----
The season doesn't need to be canceled for this to happen. Don't know why you're linking the two. Makes no sense.

They can sell Season Tickets as soon as the travel & social distancing are lifted, and the season can start 6-8 weeks later.
-------
As soon as the travel & social distancing are lifted, the season can continue 4 weeks later and clubs can start selling season tickets for the next season. This would satisfy all your queries raised here and clubs would benefit financially from finishing this season and then having another season to play.

The extra games could be the difference between many clubs going bust or staying afloat.

No football this year
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You can make things up as often as you like, it doesn't change things.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's not an "inferred hypothesis" as things stand Sky and BT are entitled to a rebate of around £750bn for failure to complete the season
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And they invoke that and claim such a rebate and what happens? They pretty much financially bankrupt the Premier Leaague and it's members. Not gonna happen is it?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, of course they would bankrupt the Premier League and its Members before Bankrupting themselves, don't be so naive.

The upsude of ripping up the contracts is Football would be free to sign a new deal with another Broadcaster, Amazon/Disney/Apple have probably already put bids in. But they will want a Full Season too...

There's no good way out of this that includes hanging on in there in the hope that by some miracle the football world can hang on in there and resume this season at a later date.

Most recent advice from the Government's advisers

🚨 Dr Jenny Harries says it could up to six months or longer before Britain goes back to normal. Deputy CMO says:

- 3 weeks till review lockdown
- 2-3 months to review the curve
- 3-6 months of social distancing measures

“It is plausible it could go further than that."

Forget it, cancel the season, focus on caring for ourselves and eachother, and start afresh in the Autumn.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There may be another way and that would be to just try and align the European season around dates for Qatar 2022 for two seasons. Nobody is going to be playing anywhere in the major nations for months so why not just give it the whole of this year to play out and start a new season in February maybe, running til November, which would give players the usual length of time between a traditional season ending and a major International tournament ending. If they were going to squeeze the world cup into the middle of the season then surely they can do the same for the 2021 Euros as well. Everything gets completed, the next season is a full one and every one goes away happy.

It would require financial support from the top to the bottom of the league system, but it's in everyone's best interest to preserve the future of our game so why not? Let's put greed to one side and do what's right.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We have the Euros, ACON and maybe the Olympics and other tournaments too.

If we reach February then next season will not be happening IMO, unless it's condensed with less fixtures which would allow for yhis season to be finished. Have to wait and see.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Uefa aren’t waiting til next Feb 2021 to finish the 19/20 season.

In fact they aren’t waiting much longer to void the season
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Just another unsubstantiated claim. They've said nothing that goes along with that, not as yet anyway.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

They have said June is deadline; when 100000 people die in April they will bring that decision forward

----------------------------------------------------------------------
You're taking one quote completely out of context. Within the very same statement it was said that decisions to finish domestic leagues will depend largely on each nations own FA. There hasn't been any "official" press release that the season finishes in June though.

"Obviously I don't know too much about behind the scenes and financially.

Tottenham have been knocked out of all cup competitions this season and were eighth in the Premier League before football was suspended. The club's last trophy was the League Cup in 2008.

Let's be honest here.

If Spurs were on the cusp of winning the league, Harry Kane would not be saying this. PHACT.

You're absolutely right. Though you don't really want players, especially the England captain, wading in with that side of the argument though as their view, rightly or wrongly, can sometimes be very influential.

Not always but yes, you that's the case.

As you've admitted, the world and his dog will know it's because Spurs are having a sheet season and if its scrapped, it would mean Spurs are in the CL for the new season.

Its a bit embarrassing actually that he's blatantly looking out for his own interests and club rather than trying to be fair. He says the end of June is it for him, but he doesn't give any sound reasoning to back that opinion up so it will look a bit selfish. Also, wants us to look forward to next season which he assumes will be unfettered.

With all due respect to Harry Kane, who I do actually really like, he's hardly the most academic sounding guy, so hopefully it's treated as just another opinion in a sea of opinions, and not dwelled upon by the bored media.

Premier League Clubs won't sue the Premier League if the Premier League is cancelled.

The Premier League IS the Premier League Clubs, and the Premier League Clubs will have voted to cancel it.

14 Clubs can change anything (subject to FA agreement) and if any of the remaining 6 don't adopt the change, they are expelled.

A sensible comprise deal with TV Companies, cancel the season, preserve future incomes, move on.

Only 4 clubs are reported to want the season to be voided. 14 have to vote for it.

Don't agree with all of that, but you do have a bit of a point there in that clubs who are members of an organisation are expected to abide by all rules and inal decisions of said organisation. They'd have the right to an appeal naturally, and would be able to escalate that appeal through the Court of Arbitration for Sport, but I'd be very surprised if any court ruled in favour of the club(s), particularly given the current circumstances. I'd expect a global health crisis would be considered a fair and just reason to cancel any competition.

Its the tv companies' litigation which would cause more headaches for the league, as the league will have breached a contract.

Well they're hardly going to be happy about it are they? Probably rubs their noses in it further when they see other leagues seemingly being allowed to explore numerous other avenues.

Missing the point here some of you, The Premier League is the Goose

Nobody is going to turn down future Golden Eggs when tgey've got such enormous liabilities (contracted player wages, unpaid transfer fees, sponsorship penalty clayses)

The TV company cash is the current stumbling block, do a compromise deal, and those 16 voted to mothball the Clubs will be forthcoming.

Throw a few bones to the Championship and below.

Cancel the season, get on with monetizing the next, re-start when it's safe to do so.

You are delusional.

If you create a premise where a season can be scrapped then you immediately lower the price e of future investment as the product is no longer seen as secure.

You will also face significant lawsuits from Liverpool, Leicester, Leeds, West Brom and many others. BT and Sky will pull a billion pounds plus of funding they were due to pay this month which clubs have already spent because the investment was priced in. So clubs will have a huge deficit almost immediately to make up.

Anyway clearly you have no grasp of economics.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What would Leeds and West Brom actually be claiming for out of interest? I keep seeing this but given both of their leads could be wiped out with 6 games still to go is more a case of tough sh-t than anything else. Leeds and WBA have already lost a lead bigger than their current one this season alone. Anyone who has a mathematical chance to go up has exactly the same right to feel aggrieved, but I couldn't see a single court ruling in any of their favours if a league was cancelled due to a global pandemic. It's an exceptional circumstance and would, in my opinion, get thrown straight out of court.

You do know, that a "compromise deal with tv companies" is wishful thinking, and that as tv companies hold all the cards it will mean a huge loss for all clubs if the season is discontinued.

I don't think you get this, clubs have already spent money TV companies have not yet provided.

I haven't even mentioned the issues regarding sponsors, commercial deals, contracts, season tickets.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You're serious aren't you?

Blimey.

1. Context
Global Pandemic. Governmental edicts preventing mass gatherings, reducing unnecessary demands on Emergency Services, social distancing, travel restrictions, hotels shut, flights cancelled.

No court ruling is going to ignore this.

2. So what next for the Premier League if Sky sue?

The Premier League will settle, then end the relationship with Sky.
Disney, Amazon, BeIN, Netflix, Apple, Google and just about every other platform on the planet will happily take the contract up, and pay the equivalent in damages to Sky to secure it.

3. So what next for Sky if they sue?

They will win a settlement.
Then lose 3 million subscribers to one of Disney, Amazon, BeIN, Netflix, Apple, Google...

And die.
