Even as a United fan, I don't see how you can have Ronaldo top of this list. For one thing, he was a wide midfielder. For another, Shearer and Henry were better for longer than he was. Ronaldo was great for a couple of years at United (not his final season, where he held a lot back) but if we're talking best PL forwards, then it has to be based on PL performance surely

Ronaldo was still extraordinary in those few seasons at United where he became a superstar. I don’t see how you can’t have him on there.

I don't have him above Henry and Shearer. Absolutely not. And he was sensational for two seasons. His final season wasn't remotely sensational. He went through the motions, whilst awaiting his promised move to Real. What Shearer and Henry did for year after year far eclipses what Ronaldo did in the PL imo

If we're using the criteria you are, then Suarez should be up there alongside Ronaldo tbh

Don, I wouldn`t be having Ronaldo top, he only played two or three seasons. He may be one of the best after he left the Prem.

Shearer is tops for me, in the Prem era. But I don`t really do just Prem eras, where goalscorers are concerned, so Jimmy Greaves would always be my top goalscorer.

posted on 29/3/20

A bit pedantic but didn't they discuss goalscorers?

Either way, Shearer would top both lists for me. He could hold it up, bully, was great in the air, score free kicks, was great from the spot, and even had a bit of pace before his injuries. Plus he has longevity on his side.

posted on 29/3/20

Suarez had the best season however wasn’t in England long enough to get the goal amounts the others had

From that list I would go with Henry.

Prem only Sandy mate. Most of us here wouldn’t be able to pick a list from that early, hence why it’s easy to pick top 10 from the prem era.

I would have Shearer, Henry (difficult to separate) and Rooney as my top 3

Rooney doesn’t get in there for me personally. Always find him very inconsistent. Could be amazing, then suddenly awful. I always found Rooney overrated.

I think he's definitely top 10. And for me it's possibly longevity with Rooney that high. But you could have Fowler up there too, if it's based on a shorter period.

Tbf it's a decent article for debate. Fair play

If Ronaldo is in the list then why not Salah who holds the record for lost goals in a PL season and has followed it up following 2 seasons.

I get that Don, but from my point of view, who did watch football pre Prem days, Greaves comes a long way top of any on your list.

Then it would be Dixie Dean. If we don’t just look at PL era.

However.

1. Shearer.

I love Drog, but Kane is one of the best prem strikers of all time mate. He’s certainly in the top 6/7. You need to take you’re west ham goggles off for once mate, Harry Kane is a phenomenal striker. His record speaks for itself.

Greaves was great for the time he played but the guy spent more time washing his car than training lol

To say he was better is madness. The game isn't comparable at all. It's not unreasonable to question whether most of them players from an older age would even be able to get fit enough to play at today's pace, if they were around now.

Greaves attitude to training wouldnt even get him in a league one team nowadays. Was a totally different game then tbh

Can't agree with Owen being above Fowler or even Suarez. In fact he'd struggle to make my top five Liverpool strikers tbh.

Owen, like Fowler is a could have been. Talking of great Liverpool strikers. Rush played in the premier league era but was way past his best. He was though imo, the best striker in our league during the 80's.

I have had this argument with Sandy a few times. I honestly don’t think football in those days was anything close to the standard or pace these days. Just watching videos I can see the defending was really poor. Maybe that’s me being ignorant as a young generation, but I thought the standard was pretty poor in those days before the foreigners started to come in and mix it up a little.
