The amount of health staff off work is a big problem.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That’s why we need to test test test.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Different tests needed. But I think the antibody test will be really useful here.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Any bloody test would be useful right now.

To me that is the most important but it still hasn't had it's viability confirmed.

And i do understand you can't just rush that.

Interesting to note we've already started human trials on various treatments.

Heard an expert talking about the human trials starting, they suggested 12-18 months for an approved vaccine would still be on the very side even with that noted

Really?

I got the impression (may well be wrong) that they would be fast tracking trails down to a 3-4 month timeline.

So much conflicting information

We still have no idea how many people have had this and from that it is impossible to predict any trends which is why the graphs are utterly meaningless and why we cannot have an exit plan

Italy and France are only reporting hospital deaths not nursing home’s or folk who die at home
So what is the real death toll?
Italy must be plus 20k?

I honestly don't know mate. I'd hazard a guess that maybe a certain amount of time and study would always need to be applied before these sort of things go to mass market?

Oh but reading your comment back I might have given the wrong impression. I guess treatments could well come much sooner, from what I've heard there are several drugs that can potentially combat the virus. These would have been approved already for other viruses so have gone from that stage well in advance.

The thing that's apparently and likely a longer way off is a vaccine

Really in 2 minds about this.

On the one hand it looks like an opportunity to get more ventilators squandered.

On the other hand, it could be the EU wanting to pool all the ventilators and distribute them where they're most needed.

If it is the latter and we had signed up then we would be obliged to hand over the ones we already have and they would instantly go to Spain & Italy leaving us without.

There's no ambiguity about this. It was about access to a shared procurement stream, exploiting economies of scale to get more at a better price. It wouldn't have stopped the UK government from also pursuing its own parallel procurement activities and didn't involve sharing around existing ventilators.

The lesson we in The West are learning too late is this; Total Lockdown early doors, and test, test and test some more.

You just hate China, clearly. But they did it. So did Taiwan, Singapore, South Korea and Japan.

Italy, Iran and Spain didn't. The UK went even further against this model and decided that herd immunity would be the best way to tackle this.

Just... Bizarre. <shakes-head>

2k frontline NHS staff tested to date. Out of a workforce of over 1.2 million.

That's not bizarre - its downright incompetent.

After ten years of austerity the NHS, bled dry, is now having bail out Johnson and Cummings.

The UK actually attended the four first meetings on EU PPE procurement. But for reasons unknown the government then chose to opt out, blaming everyone but themselves.

It's believed the UK opted out as we chose to implement the herd immunity programme and felt that (when PPE was being procured throughout Europe) it was not a priority.

This is probably one of the reasons why PPE and testing kits etc have been so hard for the UK to bring in, as we came 'late to the party' when trying to compete globally.

Apologies, #10 originally lied by saying the UK (as a non-member state) could not avail of the programme.

Minutes taken from the meetings confirmed the UK actually took part in 8 out of 12 EU health security meetings on the CV19 crisis.

Four of which focused on global PPE procurement .

They lied again by stating they accidentally missed the procurement deadline.

And for good measure added a third lie by claiming they didn’t get an invitation in time to avail of the scheme.

Had the UK taken advantage of the scheme we would now have more PPE and ventilators than we do at the moment, and more lives would have been saved.

Just saying
