Its a bit easier to end that league as it has already been won by 15 points with one game left to play.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There's 11 games to go and then a series of Play Off Games

The league splits in two, then restarts, they are 1 game away from the split

Right decision to cancel the League, naming the Champions is bonkers though

I applaud the Liverpool fans on this site who do not wish to be crowned champions is such a spurious way, hats off to them for not wanting the league to be concluded in such a bogus manner
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm sure it would be different if we were 3 points clear.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You would be expected to bottle that for sure
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Only when there's no City buses to bottle.

Feel for the team that have been relegated despite being 2 points away from safety

You can't take positions in any division as final if the teams have played a different number of games.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The PL, the EFL and the National League are all private associations who can do whatever they want.

Premier League club bosses could sit down tomorrow and decide to award final league standings through a foot race, and that would be that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You think Villa would just take that on the chin?

They would see the Prem in court and quite rightly so.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There obviously had to be quite a bit of horsetrading behind the scenes before the Belgian clubs voted for this.

It doesn't even have to involve possible relegation. Last season saw the Chilean premier league void any relegation talk by temporarily adding more league spots.

Yes but as has been pointed out, the league the splits and the totals are halved.

So say they finished 12 points clear after the final game - this gets halved to a 6 point lead with 10 games to play (all against the rest of the top 6).

Far less clear cut than Liverpool's current lead.

Yeah I get that but its my understanding the league was almost done and all teams had played each other home and away bar one game.

They have just just removed the play-offs, I think its fair to say Bruge are deserved champions.

With respect to OP.

this is a specific league with specific issues

a) there was one match to go.
b) bruge were miles clear
c) the relegated team was 2 points below the next team.

This is a rather simple case where all might agree (though i could see that relegated team suing i suppose)

The system they use is interesting.

they take the points form each team, divide by 2, figure out who is in the top 6, then they play each other 2 twice. however the top team wins the trophy.

There is no absolute need for such a system, it just gives clubs more games and perhaps crowds are more interested so cancelling them and letting league stand seems a sensible call.

Now: OPINION.

Guys its all about money. the Belgian league don't have a billion in lost revenue coming. Its done.

IMO the EFL and EPL are in a bind and need to make sure they get the money, they are in a mine field of legal issues as 25% of a season remains.

People can wish the season away for many reasons, most it seems are team in relegation danger who can weigh the loss of revenue in relegation against losing cash to TV and say cancel away.

This is not going to be an easy one, theres whinging and moaning about player welfare and such but the PRIMARY concern is money not integrity.

Do people honestly think the UK TV, European TV and global TV companies will pay up like nothing happened when people globally will have dropped the services and stopped paying last month?

UEFA and down through leagues are all staring down the barrel. They are going to pass one time frame at a time hoping to make a call or move to the next one until we get to July. Thats when the calls will have to be really made.

finally:

Liverpool's title: the only people who seem to care are whiny little wums who want to make a big deal about it.

Sure, although at the other end there is the bottom team being relegated by 2 points with a game left to play.

What I was getting at though, is that this opens the way for other leagues to cancel the season and make the decisions based on current standings.

simply put no.

Its not about what they want its about the money. Follow the money and you'll find the real decision making.

IMO its not about integrity of leagues, not about fairness, not about titles. Its all about money.

Forget about the football for a moment.

What on earth are we going to do about the school year? We can't just write off 2020, can we?

Interestingly the situation in France has really set the cats amongst the pigeons.
Over here the Premier League TV money is paid in two tranches, in advance, so the argument is around clawing money back.
In France, their version of SKY is Canal+, they pay Ligue 1in arrears and they have withheld the last payment citing Force Majeure; precisely what I imagine the Premier League would be claiming in defence against a Law Suit from SKY...
