This isn't 'The Plague' by a long way, that has been estimated to have killed around a quarter of the world's population, around half of Europe's population. This pandemic is bad at present, but doesn't compare with the impact of the black death

Religeon and superstition were the main enemies of progress during the Black Death. The backwards morons believed the church’s bullshiete threw cats and dogs off roofs believing they were the cause (or elements of satan). . These idiots didn’t realise the more of them around the less rats would be especially with cats, so would have actively helped cut the spread down.
