Liverpool as a business

That's a different situation

The players are not passing their cost onto the tax payer. It's the club who are furloughing non playing staff. The govt should go after the clubs not the players.

The donation to the NHS. I don't get why footballers are being asked to do this and no one else.

The club should be paying the wages of the non playing staff if they have the cash reserves. No one should have any issue with that.

With regards to the players taking a paycut. What's wrong with each and every player, multiplying their net salary by say 20% and transferring that to a holding account which will then be eventually given direct to the NHS. The govt still get their usual tax and ni income and the players help out.

If we're going to harass the players and get them to donate, why isn't there pressure being applied to the the other millionaires and billionaires who reside in this country. When will they take a paycut or donation?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There should just be an emergency tax rate on all high earners.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That would be a admin headache imo right now at a time where everyone bar essential workers are at home. Or atleast they should be.

It does seem a bit left field that footballers are being targeted and not musicians, actors, TV stars, company ceo's.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The only difference is that the actors etc are not trying to pass the cost onto the taxpayer.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm sure film companies are though. The difference here is footballers are under contract and are assets worth millions (hundreds of millions when combined) and to not pay them would breach that contract. Contract breached, player could potentially walk away for free

Football clubs hands are tied in this regard. The fact they apparently don't have enough to pay already low paid stuff is obviously ridiculous but a separate point.

Embarrassing to say the least.
I can't believe that our owners have even considered this action. Disgusting in my opinion.

I don’t see any problem taking the money. In fact, I applaud it. It saves us money which can be used toward other things, and we make the Liverpool hating country pay.

For as much sh!t Liverpool supporters deal with and get being called everything in the book, I don’t see it as a bailout, but a reparation.

So open your wallet and fork it over, haters.

I mentioned the other day when this was mooted that perhaps there should be a points penalty for clubs which do this.

Pretty much like going into administration, which cost Bolton 12 points at the start of the season.

With the history of my home town and how it has been treated under TORY rule, how my adopted home/area also treated by TORY rule, if this scheme is used by Everton then I think my time with them is done.

So much good work done by EiTC and Liverpool in the city, then this from Liverpool.

OP, thank you for standing up for decent folks
The only one to speak out against what Liverpool have done and who is a fan too

What other fans don't realise, and I am speaking for Spurs and Liverpool fans, these acts to furlough staff, and thus having recourse to public money will mean these greedy and rich clubs, will be bailed when there are more deserving, poorer and needier organisations .
Well done
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Loads of Liverpool fans have spoken out against it. You’re just being your usual stupid self.

Why are people attacking the people of Liverpool when they have no influence over decisions like this that the club make? Some of you just can’t stop with the tribal BS, no matter what the circumstances. Feckin imbeciles.

posted on 5/4/20

this is all very one sided.
now, i'm not saying that what they're doing is right, or morally/ethically justified. but to counteract some of this hysteria, I feel some points must be made in their defence.

firstly the clubs income will be taking a massive hit. although some merchandising sales are continuing, the continued income will be nothing compared to what they normally expect.
secondly. yes they had £42M profit last year, everyone keeps mentioning that, was that net or gross? pre or post tax? what about the years before.
that could just be bringing their cash reserves to zero following years of losses, it doesn't mean they've got that money sitting in the bank.
thirdly, they're looking at the potential prospect of having to repay a large percentage of tv money, plus sponsorship money. along with not receiving any new tranches of those that may be due.
that alone could wipe out the £42M profit, plus another £50M? £100M? last years profit could very quickly turn into a very large loss.
finally. there is no legal requirement for a business to act in a moral or ethical fashion. it is however, enshrined in law that the directors have a fiduciary duty to the company and it's shareholders. if, at this point, they can get 80% of their wage costs paid for by the government and off their own books, then they are effectively legally obliged to do so. they can't do it for contractors, such as playing staff, but they can for employees.

so there, morally, ethically right? nope.
financially, and legally right? yes
justifiable? again, morally, and ethically, no, but as stated, legally, the directors probably have no choice but to do this or risk being sued themselves.

and on one final point, at least they are ensuring that the furloughed staff, and the temp matchday staff are not going to be losing out financially. agreeing to ensure they get paid the full amount they would normally expect not enforcing a 20% pay cut on them like spurs have (not seen if Newcastle are forcing a cut or paying the additional 20%)

What on earth makes you thi Liverpool fans are hated? By a stupid few, but mostly it's jealousy and banter. Never heard of Abus ?
It's half a dozen people on here, not a nationwide campaign.
And no, it's not right what they have done, and I'll say the same if we do it.

For me, it’s an attack against the club that appears to have lost any connection with the city.

If Everton do this, I’m done with them. Will never celebrate another victory, cup win or walk into Goodison again and you can quote me on that.

Had an interesting quote from the media.

‘what would Shankly do?' Doubt he'd have said let the taxpayer pay some wages when you've just made £42m profit.

Bore off, that’s my hometown, I don’t feel attacked.

I feel let down by the actions of a club doing good stuff for the community, then this PR disaster.

What would Shankly be doing if he were manager. I am sure the great man would have been very vocal and against this.

As I said, it’s lost all connection with the city and if Everton follow then I am done.

Don’t forget though, all those people who were panic buying at the start of all this would do exactly the same if they had the brains or privilege to be in that position too

This is why none of the big issues in football ever get properly resolved. From racism, to ownership, safe standing, to ticket pricing. Every time there needs to be constructive discourse between fan groups, ignorance and tribalism takes over.

This has nothing to do with Liverpool supporters, Tottenham supporters, or even about their clubs, when you think about it. It's solely about the current custodians of these institutions, and the p/ss poor way they're selling us all - including the people they rely on to keep pumping money into their 'franchises' - down the river.
