long over due

Good luck with that.

Salary cap. Come on.

There may well be a downturn in fees and wages for a year or two but the appetite for the game when it does return to normality will just take it back to what it as before.

The only chance is the tv companies refusing to pay the ludicrous sums they were previously.

He must have been drunk.

There will still be money about. It will cause a bit of a downturn, no doubt. But not as dramatic as this suggests.

Morally correct but is it enforceable?

posted on 20/4/20

Reform the system, put caps and force clubs to use the TV money to reduce matchday prices and invest in player development instead.

posted on 20/4/20

Good luck forcing that through.

Football is a business so then you can't really force them to do anything.

All this would be unconstitutional and contravening the rights of the clubs as legal persons.

Or at least that would be the argument.

And nobody will want to go down that road.

Rugby, NFL, NBA, MLB, NRL, AFL, cricket

many sports around the world have and enforce salary caps

How many of those are in Europe? And of those in Europe, how many of those had an elite group of clubs with the capability to break away and form their own league?

Think about why the PL and CL even exist. And then think about why they will do anything they possibly can not to lose their cash cow. We don’t even need to get to legalities.

well rugby enforces it and they have European competitions.

What about FFP rules enforced on clubs

I was listening to Simon Jordan on the radio the other week. He also wrote an article on his proposed changes. I thought he spoked well on the matter and made some great comments. His proposals are:

1. Salary caps across leagues linked to a percentage of turnover — eg 50 per cent. This would reduce Premier League and Championship wage bills by £625million per year.

2. The transfer market also has to change, so clubs get their other major outlay under control. A net allowance of 20 per cent of the previous year’s turnover on transfer spend.

3. The transfer window to be abolished. It has  created a bad business market —  specifically ratcheted-up  January prices. The market should instead be open all year for clubs to trade at times when their cash flow needs it.

4. Agents should only be able to act for one party — clubs or players. They should be reduced to five per cent commission and levies of between three to five per cent placed on that commission. That would put another £15m back into  the football pyramid.

5. The PFA should be stripped of its £27m-a-year GIFT from the Premier League after their divisive and destructive behaviour in this crisis. Instead it should be given to grassroots football, funded by its own members. If players had to pay the £27m, it works out to be 0.75 per cent of their salaries, so the average Premier League player would pay just £27,000 a year.

But they aren’t comparable with the premier league and champions league as money making entities. They aren’t owned by billionaires. The revenue of the whole of premier league rugby is comparable to the bottom team in the premier league. They don’t have the financial power or clout to dictate to the authorities in the way football clubs do. Nor do they have the capability to break away to form their own league like they do in the premier league football. I don’t think it’d even be possible to force a wage cap in the premier league without 14 clubs agreeing to it anyway. And that isn’t going to happen.

Yeah, the billionaire owners of PSG will be desperate to sell.

Salary caps are much needed, I'm sure all clubs would welcome them as it will only put an end to incredible wages.

However, unless it's adopted worldwide, nothing stopping players performing stints in China, Qatar or the U.S to earn obscene wages.

honestly I think as long as all the major European leagues were on board we'd be fine.

players by and large are egotistical and want to play for premier clubs in premier competitions.

today they could all go to china for silly money and only the second tier or twilight players are taking it up.

clubs would be all for it because their revenue will stay the same but profits would go through the roof if wage bills were reduced.

posted on 20/4/20

They wouldn’t because you’d take away their competitive edge, by limiting their spending, and their ability to grow commercially, and competitively, at a faster rate by bringing in players on bigger wages.
