Future Enland team 2026

I know we have discussed this to death before but I don't see Trent moving into midfield. His career path is as a full back and what great full back he is. 21 and already touted as one of the best in the world.

Gerrard never established himself as a right back like TAA did.

But anyway it’s good that there’s a lot of promising young English talent. Obviously half of them will fall by the wayside, as is often the case, but there’s a few very special talents that will still be there by 2026. I’m sure there will be plenty more young talents that will break through and knocking on the door by 2026. They’re probably about 12-16 right now.

Technique wise we look to be making great strides.

Yes Gerrard was a versatile midfielder in a pretty weak Liverpool team. His career progression isn’t one I see TAA following as the latter has established himself as one of the best full backs in one of the best teams.

Unless Liverpool completely fall off a cliff and have to start moving him around to cover for weak areas, I don’t see him being moved from the position he’s established himself in.

From our current young players I would say we seem light at DM/LB. Well not light, just a lack of elite talent coming through.

At DM there’s Rice, Winks, Choudhury, Skipp. Don’t fancy any of them becoming elite.

At LB there’s Shaw, Williams (right-footed, doubt he plays there long-term), Saka (doubt he stays there long-term but does look quite accomplished there, could play for Nigeria), Sessegnon. Again don’t fancy any of them being elite (other than maybe Saka).

Not that a lot of them aren’t or wouldn’t be perfectly serviceable players in a top side. Don’t need elite players in every position.

TAA probably won’t move position for club but I could definitely see it being experimented in midfield internationally.

Forgot that Reece James could be an option as a defensive midfielder.

It actually isn’t too inconceivable we could play all of TAA, James and AWB in the same side (if it is three at the back. Or even 4 at the back with both TAA and James in midfield - less likely)

A CM who can contribute going forward whilst not being a weak link defensively is something we dont have

Our midfield options seem to be limited to pure creative players and then deeper midfielders who don't get goals or assists

That may be, but I think even if you get a coach that relies less on the full backs TAA will still be one of the best around and used there. Time will tell, I guess.

But again, at the moment the way we play tactically he fits in. When Klopp goes, the fullbacks not be used in the same way and then TAA may be moved.

This but also I think Trent will simply want to play in midfield. I actually think he'll get better numbers anyway.

Maybe it’ll change in the future but Abraham over Greenwood.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Harry Kane is still starting for England in 2026. He’ll be 32/33.

But him wanting to play in midfield won't mean much. Emre Can wanted to play a certain role, I'm sure that Hendo wanted to play more advanced for years before he finally has been moved. TAA won't dictate it to Klopp if it doesn't help the team.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I think it means a lot myself. We'll see. Either way I feel it will be better for the team in a few years if Trent plays there but I rate him as becoming WC so there we go.

Injuries will be the main hurdle.

Do you honestly think Kane would be capable of scoring penalties against Panama at 33 years old?

Penalties, yes; but he won’t have the athleticism to pull off that deflected goal.

posted on 22/4/20

True, only Lampard could still do that at 33.

Lampard even got the Chelsea manager’s job via a wicked deflection off Derby County.
