Gerrard - Success or Failure

My view on Gerrard is that he has been a moderate success for Rangers but won't exactly be going down in folklore. He needs to win a trophy in the next campaign or he's failed.

in the cold light of day in the madness that is football,
2nd is kind of nothing.

In that respect clear failure.

Are their some very good reasons for being second.
(beyond being a dud) well to most who are not hard of thinking then yes their are.

You can afford it, just signed a £20M Merch deal.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It was a bit devoid of detail that announcement tbh
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Rangers haven't announced their new Merch deal yet.

I think from pedro standing in a hedge to where we are now there has absolutely been progres. last 16 from qualification round in a short time is amazing.

We still had the likes of pena and herera on the books this season so still heavily paying for that disaster

We are also consolidated in 2nd.

We also go into old firm games thinking we can win not hoping we keep the score down. That absolutely had to happen before any full recovery.

I also like him in the press and media (with some exceptions) and the infrastructure changes he has led all seem good

but

I personally don't like his public criticism of the players not really keen on any manager that does it but if you do you have to be consistent and for me goldson and tav have made as many and probably more high profile errors than the players he has called out. Either do it across the board or don't.

I would have liked more success in the cup but it just wasn't to be in the league cup final. celtic had the luck and sometimes it happens.

for me the biggest thing is the 2 collapses directly after the break.

For that to happen once was bad but twice is very worrying.

Im probably 50/50 on him right now.

That said we cant keep changing things every year or 2. He has shown something so i think he needs another year.

i think its harsh to compare gerrard with warburton but perhaps not pedro. pedros had a few quid to spend did he not?

warburton would have been a decent shout i think, had he had more time and resources

That is a fair shout on Warburton I think. He had the fans with real high hopes of challenging but the expectation level went through the roof. Do you think if he was given the time to make a team and was still in charge he'd have the team stronger?

I would say yes but he would possibly have fallen down the trap of Rodgers in that his tactics were quickly sussed and didn't change

Gerrard has spent what 20m? If you look at the squad the only players here before him were Wes, Tav, Jack, Halliday and Morelos.

So for all the chat of him having money, he’s turned around the squad entirely. And done a good job for the money spent. Celtic spent almost that much last summer on two players.

So for me although his tactics have been shhite at times, he deserves another year.

So you think he deserves another year because he spent money to turn around the team but still only finish second?

What are the differences from the first season? Making a cup final?

Comparisons over his two seasons:
Signed loads of players
Decent show in Europe
Beat Celtic at New Year
Collapsed after New Year

I'm not saying he does or doesn't deserve a new contract, this is Scotland and to go two full seasons without winning anything and staying in a job is almost unheard of at the OF. I suspect we would have to go back to Liam Brady or Lou Macari to find that. Is that the level of manager Gerrard is?

"i think its harsh to compare gerrard with warburton"

Not really.

The similarities are glaring.

A stubbornness to change from his preferred system being the main one which has cost us time and again.

Constantly picking his favourites anaw, even when they are in need of dropping.

Both duds.

He is miles away from what the spin was, when he got the job (not his fault) but apparently it was a stepping stone to replace Klopp what utter schite he is miles away from that. It is what it is I suppose but Rangers or Celtic for that matter being stepping stones is a thing I hate be it players or coaches or managers, when did we accept that we were a stepping stone, ffs we between both clubs have scuddied English teams many many times but now we are a place for them to do their apprentice work before telling us to gtf.

I think SGs biggest issue has been the attitude of some of the key players.

Morelos pretty much single handedly caused the season to fall apart with his red card at Parkhead. It was completely unnecessary.

That said I couldn't believe SG left him on the park for so long when he was on a yellow.

However - Morelos being out suspended then coming back and being clearly out of shape stopped all the wonderful momentum he had generated.

And whilst Foster had the game of his life in the cup final Morelos once more failed to put the ball in the net when it really mattered.

Tav had let SG down in terms of being a captain. Some of his comments in the press have been horrific. But most importantly you can see from his body language on the pitch he just isn't a captain.

We have desperately lacked leadership on the park when we have been up against it.

The big thing for me is whether SG can recognise and rectify these things.

We need to move on from Morelos and we need a proper captain.

We also need a couple of absolute battler players that are going to stop us being bullied and put the fear into the opposition.

Because we are soft as sheidt physically and mentally.

He's successfully blinkered a few fans into believing his hype.but like many before him, he has a system and cannot deviate to his own detriment.

The measure of his success must be his Euro exploits and bringing some consistency back. As a manager I'd say flop but the PR job getting so many fans back in Ibrox willing to accept domestic white wash after white wash. That's the truly successful achievement here.

I don't think you need to move on from Morelos, look around the world at some of the top strikers (no I am not saying he is at the top yet) but they are all characters with attitudes and attributes

Shearer is the most arrogant player that ever lived,Diego Costa is an absolute looney. Teams don't get rid of them, they find ways to make their style work and any shortcomings get worked on.

I don't think you can change him being a hothead but for 3 years in a row Morelos has fallen away after Christmas. Identify why and you have a striker capable of leading you to trophies, pity for Rangers fans that the team behind him are loanees journeymen, at the end of their careers or just not up to the job

I thought that signing Arfield and Jack was supposed to be the answer?
