Lexington 125.2 (U8879)

And at best it's nice of the players who wanted to do it.

But it won't achieve anything at all.

There's every chance the players have individually done something to help and it would have been nice to promote those causes, using this photo.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Depends how you define 'achieve' I guess.

If it makes one Black Liverpool supporting kid in America feel empowered because his heroes are standing with him, then that in itself is something good.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeh but black people feeling empowered isn't really the issue, is it?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's part of the issue though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It really isn't.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Care to elaborate on this point, or are we going to go round and round until one of us dies of boredom?

I'm really not.

How do you know it won't achieve anything?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It's my opinion.

What do you think it achieves?

This isn't about Liverpool, this is about all celebrities, sports stars, brands.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer the question
----------------------------------------------------------------------

No need to be rude ffs.

Of course I don't 'know'.

I'm using logic and common sense to form an opinion.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No you're making assumptions
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Nope, I'm doing exactly what I just wrote.

If you want to have a sensible conversation then great.

If you just want to have a pop at me - presumably because it's Liverpool players in the photo being discussed - then thanks but no thanks.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Stop, you are making assumptions that is obvious, you just decided that no player has done anything bar kneel, that kneeling won't do anything, then claim this is my opinion, it's all assumptions you have made with zero knowledge.

Yeh sure.

How oppressed people feel is irrelevant to resolving the causes of this issue.

Kneerash.

I don't want this to become an offensive slanging match but you're being bang out of order here.

I said no such thing. In fact, I said the opposite.

Trust me, I have a lot more experience and knowledge on this subject than you do.

Are you white Winston? If so just step back and let black people tell their story, just listen. Your, or my opinion doesn't matter.

How facking dare you.

Don't like the truth?

But I never once mentioned 'resolving' issues. I merely said that it might help some kid feel better about them self.

Just stop talking and listen to the actual people affected.

Fack sake.

Club allegiance over decency - what has this forum become.

If we were discussing something done by a brand, I wonder if the same people would object to my comments as strongly.

Of course they wouldn't.

Disgusting.

Any sports stars or any celebrities in general doing anything they can do to support against racism and raise awareness is a very good thing.

I do have a slight issue when it goes over into the political though, even more so when it's not even a domestic political issue. It can be a pandoras box that is very difficult to manage once it's opened.

I wouldn't call it a cheap publicity stunt.

I would, however, expect more from PL players then simply posing for a photograph on one knee.

Such as?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

What, you don't know? Genuinely?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’d like to know what ideas you had in mind seeing as you’re the one suggesting they should be doing more.

Like what in your opinion?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Like donating to the funds set up to support the cause.

Like donating to support the legal representation required by supporters.

Like promoting petitions.

Like sharing resources that help to educate people about the background of this issue in the US.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You don’t know what organisations players are involved with regarding bringing awareness to race relations.

At the same point players are damned of they do, damned if they don’t. Speak out and they’re ‘getting involved in politics’ and reminded politics and sport don’t mix.

From what I’ve read Van Dijk and Gini brought the idea up. All they wanted to do was send a message of solidarity. Not be signed up to the UN’s peacekeeping mission.

I have not once sat here trying to defend Liverpool. You are making wild assumptions about players and what they have or haven't done.

I thought you were but here we are.

I'm all up for the conversation mate, but you started with a negative against black players wanting to do something, saying its pointless etc. Why should anyone listen to you (or me) on this subject?

You genuinely trying to tell me you know what it's like to be black in America?

posted on 2/6/20

"I know more about this than you" ha ha ha the whitest thing ever.

posted on 2/6/20

Okay, firstly, just to address a few individual points.

Lexington - I'm not angry with you.. you've made a reasonable point, I just don't agree. You can't empower people in a country with institutionalised racism and systemic failings.

Fields - with respect, I think you need to re-read what I have put. I've said there's every chance the players have done those things and I've not 'damned them' - I've said it's a good thing.

Kneerash - Please, step back and stop for a minute. I don't want to fall out with you but understand that what you've said is really not fair at all.

This:

"You are making wild assumptions about players and what they have or haven't done."

As an example, is a lie. An outright lie.

You've twisted my comment about brands and celebrities and are now telling me that I need to stop and listen to black people?

How dare you.

Let me just explain. I've experienced this. I've lived it. I've listened my whole life.

However, not in America. And their issue is very different.

If you take your own advice, kneerash, and stop to listen then you'll find that whilst knowing that people like PL players support you is nice, it absolutely won't have any effect on addressing the issues in society that have led us to this point.

Just in the same way a post on Twitter from a company selling yoghurts telling us that we're all in this together won't make a jot of difference.

Let's be clear. I absolutely have not criticised the players - I have said this is a nice thing.

I've also said, I am sure they're doing other things to support this cause.

But I'd love to see those constructive actions promoted alongside a photo like this - to help affect real change and to help the people suffering right now.

I don't agree with the article but I have symathy for that view. When people see these photos, tweets etc. it's easy to be cynical - not necessarily that it's been done with bad intentions, but that it's been done in some vain belief that it will help when really it's just a 30 second action that has no real constructive value.

Now please, if you want to discuss this sensibly then that is great. But if you just want to have a pop at me then I'll leave it here, because what has been said started to upset me.
