"It's just banter" takes us neatly into United's managerial hunt, with the papers stating that Malky Mackay is the favourite for the job. He dismissed his own racist behaviour as "banter".

Clarification - it was the LMA who claimed it was banter.

It doesn't change my stance.

Agree we must all be at least a little complicit

I went to school it was white bar 3 Asian families kids
One of whom went on to do rubbish as a sporting director

I’ve never encountered it no idea why
We have our lovely sectarian issues mind you

Equality in all its areas is a must and the principle of BLM In this regard is pretty solid

My life experience is I have to admit very limited in this area
Hence I tend to keep out these debates

I did in a previous life work for a business head office in South Carolina

That facility had a zero tolerance to racism

In fact during one visit there was an incident where a warehouse guy was sacked for using inappropriate language

That said out of work may have been different

Many years ago, when I played, I heard one of my team-mates (the only black player on the pitch) get racially abused. I turned round to where he was, but no-one else had reacted (it was a corner so a crowded penalty box) - not even my team-mate who had been abused. As such I started doubting if I had heard right, even though I heard it clearly. I regret to this day not saying something or reacting, but at the time I was a 16 year old kid playing my first few games in an adult league. However, it has always played on my mind - especially the way my abused team-mate had no real reaction to it.

I will say, though, in my experience the police take racially aggrivated violence a lot more serious than your every day assault. I was the victim of an assault by some club bouncers (I wasn't in the club, hadn't been in the club and had no previous interaction with them - it was a case of mistaken identity and steroid filled meatheads looking for a fight) - and the police barely acknowledged it. Then on another night out, I was with some work colleagues including an Indian guy. He was racially abused so fists started flying. The police after that were calling me everyday, offering me support, giving me all these leaflets etc. I barely had a scratch from that, yet when I had stitches galore holding my head together they pretty much ignored me

Whilst I agree with the overall message, I think context is a big issue here.

If something genuinely is banter, then it needs to be taken that way, or we will be walking into a culture where we can’t use very many words in the fear of ‘offending’ someone.

I also disagree that just because you don’t act against something means you are very much for it. E.g I am very much against climate change, however, will I still drive a car. Yes I will. I am also against animals being slaughtered. Will I stop eating meat, absolutely not.

I think we need to take the overall message into account before just blanketing an individual as racist, sexist, etc etc

Spot on Ivan

Its about the subconscious bias. Its about opportunity to improve and not who has endured poverty. Its about equality and not about who committed what crimes.

If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.

How can you be against climate change? Most scientists reckon in ten years it will be too late and the planet will be in a run away greenhouse effect.

When I say I am against climate change, I mean that I am unhappy the world is fecked. May not have worded it well 😂

Very good post OP. I think this is what's so great about BLM. The aren't many out and out racists but there is a lot of unconscious biases.

To me that is the biggest issue humanity faces.

Forget Corona and racisim. Climate change is an actual fact and we do nothing.

The biggest fear is that humanity is too selfish to actually do anything. We will no doubt still be debating the issue while millions die

Big time agree on this.. people who go on multiple holidays a year, drive massive gas guzzlers etc

I try to not go as many holidays as is humanely possible and if I could afford it would get an electric car

I look at how our winters and summers have drastically changed in thirty years and its not hindsight.

Last year it hit 40 degrees here. I mean come.on 40 degrees

It is humanely possible to never go on holiday - and you don't need to try that hard to not go on holiday

I think a lot of people like myself, aren't bothered about racism. I'm not racist, I have no opinion on skin colour whatsoever, however, I'm not outraged at racist behaviour and im not touched by players taking the knee. When BBC posted articles on racism at matches every week last season, I didn't read them.

Its a good point Ivan w do need to be open for people who have made these mistakes or will to be able to change, apologies and have a second chance.

If MacKay were to make a genuine apology would it change your position? Should it?

I kind of get Joe's point

If something genuinely is banter, then it needs to be taken that way, or we will be walking into a culture where we can’t use very many words in the fear of ‘offending’ someone.

Maybe apologise and change future behavior if and when it does happen?

Although for that to happen we do need to be a bit more tolerant of mistakes too. Wee seem to live in a world where one tweet or comment (sometimes from years ago) can ruin your career. Trial by social media is brutal
