Should Dan James go on loan next season?

I don't think so.

He's not far off PL level and he'll benefit more by being involved and around better players than him imo.

No, We need him, Especially if we get Sancho this his summer as well.

posted on 8/7/20

No, he’ll be an impact sub which is what he should have been this season had we not needed him to play so much.

He wasn’t bought as the finished product. He needs time to develop and learn.

I'd be surprised if we did loan him to be honest.

I'm interested to see what we do with Chong though. After some deliberation he signed a new contract but hasn't been seen in the matchday squads recently and he's very raw and rough around the edges. Personally I've never been convinced by him but I can't see how or why he'd sign a contract if the plan isn't to loan him out.

James is probably less naturally gifted than Chong but is a little more refined and is probably PL standard already. I'd have thought he's at a stage where staying with United is the best thing for his development.

Maybe we should keep him.

I’m just thinking we could have Rashford, Sancho and Grealish as options on the left and Greenwood and Sancho as options on the right.

If we are in need of an impact off the bench you would probably go for any of those 5 if they are not starting over Dan James.

James is at his most useful coming off the bench when we are leading.

Does he stay just to do that?

Good squad player, can play a few different positions and would be great for the cups.

If Sancho and Grealish both arrive (which I doubt), then yes.

If it’s just Sancho, the club will have to speak with him.

He’d be third choice on the right, and second choice at best on the left. He’d only be getting games when Rashford is unavailable/rested.

I want James to stay if he stays. I want him to leave if he leaves. I have never seen him play.

With Sancho, we’d have:

Rashford—-Martial—-Sancho
James——-Ighalo—-Greenwood

With Sancho and Grealish:

Rashford—-Martial—-Sancho
Grealish—-Ighalo—-Greenwood

We might also see Grealish deputise for Bruno, but I don’t see a significant role for James in that scenario without further curbing Greenwood’s development (which happens by default to a degree if Sancho arrives).

Batty is too old now tbh

I think James can still do well for us. His pace and cunning can cause problems against tired legs and I think he will be happy as a squad player. He'll chip in with goals too, i think (and win us penalties)

I think the club also have to be looking at reducing the wage bill over the next 24mths.

COVID-19, Brexit (further devaluation of the pound), and the recession are all going to hit hard and we have important renewals of improving young players coming.

Getting players out on loan will help with that. I think we may see a senior squad reduced in size somewhat and more of a reliance on the U23s/U18s in the cup competitions and to provide cover.

and the answer to the OP is surely no.

even if we were to sign grealish and sancho, that would still only give us 6 quality options for the front 4 - the 4 that started the last match plus the two new boys.

ighalo is only here until january, though that could be extended i guess. but james must be ahead of all of chong, lingard, pereira, and mata (frankly all 4 can leave as far as i'm concerned).

so that leaves 6 (or 7) players to cover 4 positions, which doesn't seem excessive, and given our traditional injury woes, could even be considered light.

If Ighalo isn’t renewed (or made permanent), we’ll need to bring a proper number nine in though. James won’t help out with that.

What benefit would we get from a loan? If he isn't happy as a squad player (which tbh he always was going to be) then I'm not too sure a loan is going to somehow make him a more useful player for us?

If the club feel that there is room for improvement and that he has a chance of getting back into the first team over someone like Grealish (which I personaly doubt) then fine, other wise why not just sell him?

depends how the club views greenwood's future i guess...you will know a lot better than me what positions he used to take up for the youth teams, he's certainly looked better on the right this season than up to, although he hasn't played up top since the restart (when he has looked like a much more PL-ready player).

good thing is that if we were to bring the two newbies in, we'd have a lot of players who could cover a lot of positions - rashford can play left or up top, ditto martial, greenwood right or up top, grealish left or no. 10, sancho anywhere across the 3 behind the striker etc.

From what I've read Greenwood will eventually play centrally but like many strikers having games out wide early in their career can be very beneficial. So far Ole's been great with Greenwood and I'm sure in time we'll see him more centrally.

Plenty of evidence coming from good sources that we are in for both.

Not saying we’ll get either but I reckon that’s the clubs aim.

Worth keeping as a squad player. But I think he’ll probably move on in a year or so as he will struggle to even get games as a squad player.

Ya I wouldn’t be overly surprised by this. Think he’ll have a decent career but not sure he has what it takes to be anything like a regular at United if we want to be competing at the top of the game.

posted on 8/7/20

Definitely not. Greenwood is 18. There is inevitably going to come a period where he's blowing cold, at which poi T Ole will need to be able to reign him in and take him out of the limelight for a little while.
People seem to have their hierarchy of players set in stone but there's such a thing as form.
James looked like our most dangerous attacking threat early in the season when Martial and Rashford were floundering.
There's no guarantee of who's coming in or how we'll they'll take to playing at the club. There may well come a time that James becomes surplus to requirements. This will be very dependent on his own progression as a player. But I would seriously doubt that Ole will deem him surplus by the beginning of next season.

Wouldn’t surprise me to see him at a club like West Ham or Watford in a year or two.
