You don’t have to create a chance to get an assist. Numerous assists are as a result of another player scoring out of nothing.

Counted as assists, despite taking play/chance taking changing deflections. vC is saying an assist is a created chance meant by the creator, not some lucky deflection from the ‘assisters ‘ pass presenting the goal scoring opportunity, and it being counted as an assist.

Every game City have players like Mahrez, or Jesus, Or Bernardo Silva on the bench, some games they start, some they’re brought on. They signed Mahrez and Silva when they already had Sterling and Sane ffs.

I don’t get the argument where people turn their nose up at players like Grealish because we already have Bruno or Rashford in those positions.

We don’t need to replace the first team attackers (apart from the right forward), we need top replacements for the squad or we’re either an injury, or a festive fixture pile up from players like Lingard and Periera starting games for us again, and more than likely dropping points to sides way down the league like we have for years.

......

You would find it hard not to.

All this is true.

Jlingz had been a sore disappointment to me.

But this is the flaw in the assist stats.

Look at the assists Bruno and Matic got at the weekend. They didn’t really create a chance. The passed it to Greenwood and Martial and they scored a goal out of nothing.

So an assist isn’t always a chance being finished. But obviously when chances are finished the team with the better finishers are going to finish them more regularly. Which is why Rashford has as many assists as Grealish, despite not being as creative a player.

....:

There is an even bigger flaw in the chances created stats. Downing was $hite despite having top chances created stats.

Maybe do away with assists and replace it with 'presentable goal scoring opportunity facilitation' and include everyone that was included in the move.

They could rebrand it 'expected goal contribution' and get Hafi to run the video team at Stokeley Park.

This stuff is really important.

They’re both flawed. Downing was a better player than he was given credit for that season, though. His goal scoring was poor, but he used to create a lot of good chances that his teammates didn’t take. If I recall, Liverpool missed more big chances and hit the woodwork more times than anyone in the league that year.

No. We need expected assists and expected to be an assist but not quite because it deflected. And expected subterranean earthquake 10,000 miles away may have moved the ball at a crucial time..

Hafi, over to you....

If we could flog Mata, Lingard and Andreas and bring in Sancho and Grealish we’ll than have a squad of attackers more comparable to City’s than Everton’s.

Then there's your problem of whether it was a crappy pass but amazing work by the scorer (VAR Decision: No Assist), or an out of this world through ball that some 50p boots clogger ballooned over the bar from 5 yards (VAR Decision: Assist Awarded).

He is one of the plus points of this season.

No need to loan him out, particularly when lesser players should be out before him, and especially when he is currently the best in the squad in his correct position.

Even if a better player for his position arrives, then he is still a better than competent back-up - again, of course, if TWO better arrive then maybe a loan could be considered. But until then ..........
