I know you did the double on City playing defensive and on the break but this new side won't be able to play that way and why should they.

------------------------------------------------

Why not?

This side may be very dominant in games now and it's no surprise given the players we have and the opposition we've faced lately but we're still a side that's geared towards fast transitional football with the players we have, not one that's focused on dominating and maintaining possession even though we will have the lion's share of the ball in most games.

I still think we'll need to make improvements defensively however there's no reason why this side can't be more disciplined when they need to be.

The Ole outers aren't the only ones who should be pointed out. The people laying into the likes of Martial, Pogba and Rashford should hang their heads in shame.

There were people who actually thought McT/Fred should be starting ahead of Pogba before games resumed. Some thought Ighalo should be starting over Tony. I don't see a difference between these people and staunch Ole outers.

Having better players on the pitch at the same time has helped everybody.

Having said all of that, we're not there yet and we shouldn't be patting anybody on the back until they achieve something.

Just enjoy the moment.

Why shouldn’t players have to play for their place in the side?

You earn the right to play, and should have to fight to keep your place in the team based on your performances.

You can’t just put your 11 most technically gifted players on the pitch and tell the rest of the squad that they’ll play every week because the rest of you aren’t good enough.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

How many star players have you seen having to fight their way back into the team after injury, having out performed the players in their position?

It hardly ever happens and this is why Ole almost immediately put all of his best players back into the same team. Unless of course you feel that Pogbas 20 minute cameo against Spurs over shadowed half a season worth of performances from Fred/McT.

What’s a star player?

Was £75m Lukaku a star player? Was Di Maria? Was Falcão? Was Depay? Is Alexis Sanchez? Would you like me to go on?

You put your best performing players in the side, and when they’re performing well, you tend to want to keep them in there.

I’m not saying Pogba shouldn’t have come back into the side. I’m saying it absolutely shouldn’t have been a given, and that suggesting that the only consideration should be the talent at each player’s disposal when making team selections makes it sound very much like the proponent has learnt all they know about football from Championship Manager.

How does Klopp pick his Liverpool midfield? Why did Fergie often choose to play Fletcher or Butt over Scholes or Veron?

A star player is somebody who performs better than most of the team. Regardless of what people think of him, he's always outperformed other players in his position. Like I said I haven't seen many managers in the upper tier of world football making their highest performers (star players) work their way back into the team and this applies to Ole as well.

If this was the case then De Gea would have been dropped a long time ago.

Imagine Fernandes gets injured and all of a sudden Lingard starts playing well. Would Fernandes then need to work his way back into the team? This would be ludicrous.

My initial point in all of this is that people were irrationally writing players off, the same way others did with Ole. It didn't take much to see that if they were given what they needed, they'ed be our best players. The same way Ole has now started performing now he has the tools he needs at his disposal.

__________

But Pogba at United has never played anything like Fernandes has been playing, or not with any consistency. Both McTominay and Fred have actually sustained good form over a longer period this season than Pogba has at any stage in his United career.

At the moment, Pogba is a "star player" for us because of his price tag and reputation. Most of the time he's been mediocre. Obviously I'm happy he's back and looking like he might turn it around.
