Big Jack

Agree with Barry.
Charlton Senior.
'I'm not a player. I only stop players playing. My brother is a player.'
In his ROI manager role in the 80's, he did a lot to break down centuries
old views both sides of the Irish Sea. Folk not alive or aware at that time
may not appreciate that.
He gave me some of my most memorable days as a football fan. I was only a kid during Euro 88 but I remember the sheer joy it brought everyone around me, they were brilliant brilliant days. I reckon Jackie and his team gave me the love I have for football. Ireland is sincerely mourning the loss of Jack tonight.
'88 good year for me Barry.
Both parents still with me & youngest safely born in Nov.
Celtic winning the Double in our Centenary year was OK as well.
Thats class Quinny mate
My Da loved sport and would watch any that was on TV, he would only attend Dubs games though. He must have been trying to get me interested in football as I remember playing outside with my mates and him calling me in to watch "the big match" I didnt have any interest, it was the game in Stuttgart and Houghtons goal, I never seen him dance around the living room before and every save Bonner made (there were many) was cheered as if it was a goal when the full time whistle went we were all dancing around the room, then out to the street and everyone was outside cheering and celebrating.. I thought it was just amazing, I was hooked!
Barry
Triggered a memory or 3 there.
Was a Sunday & we were selling our house needed more room.
A Swedish lad came in to view it just as Ray Glesga Boy scored.
I went apeshit.
Missus was raging.
Great memories!
My brother took me to the airport when they returned, at this point Ray Houghton was my favourite player ever managed to squeeze through the crowds and Ray signed a Coca Cola sticker album type thing for me.. Its in the attic in my Mums I remember him serenading the crowd with "Who stuck the ball in the english net, I did, I did!! I was star struck.
Quinny, there a docu on RTE tomorrow night "The Boys in Green" looking back at those days. You might be able to get it back on the RTE player
6 years later 94 we were in Dub for a delayed 40th for me. World Cup US
Houghton did it again v Italy. We watched it in Temple Bar (when it was
sane). Up to St Stephen's Green after it with a carry out in a mad sing
song, gatecrashed a posh wedding @ the Gresham where the bridesmaids
were sliding doon banisters, A few pints in O'Donahues & rolled home to
posh digs in Ballsbridge after sunrise.
What a shiiite day that was.
Barry will catch it - got the RTE app.
Spend a lot of time on the GT4 as well for the music.
Love it.
Seeing more & more Scottish folk on there.

Great stuff.. Ive been watching more and more of it during the lockdown. Theyve been showing a lot of classic GAA games, lots of great trad music sessions and some good films too.. actually TG4 has been more entertaining than RTE of late
We've got bbc Alba & bbc Scotland - both very good in parts.
A fair amount of guff in between.
TG4's my go-to at the moment.
Heading off now lads stay safe

That BLM thread was closed so could not reply.
I watched Rangers on Alba and TG4 and it was strange,, alright.....think TG4 did an old firm once and am convinced it was on a hand held video recorder lol.
Good station for old films and western, that TG4
Take it easy big man.

Good memories, Mighty.
During the ROI Italy game I got into a row with republic fans in a belfast bar called the Egg and bouncers launched me out the western pub style swinging doors.....I know, not like me.
So, I tried to get into the bar across the road to watch the game, but bouncers there had just watched my departure, and we had a laugh.
.
So I sneaked in to the Welly Park hotel to see Rays goal.
Fair play to them.
Houghtons goal was in the 11th minute
I really hope it is true as that would be delicious, spending the rest of the game in a hotel bar praying for goals that would never come. Unfortunately I smell schitte.
