Not sure you get more people watching when Astana v Shaktar Donetsk than Milan v Arsenal which would be a classic UEFA CUP clash in the group stage if they didn't change the old format

I'd guess that as the admission to the CL was extended to teams coming 3rd & 4th in their leagues, the quality of teams initially in the EL went down, so you'd have a competition littered with cannon fodder and the odd bigger team that wouldn't meet each other until later in the tournament.
The qualifying group of CL is pointless as the seeding makes it clear which 2 teams (should) progress to the knockout.
Im really not bothered to pay £50 to watch United play some Swiss part-time outfit on a cold Tuesday night in November. But I have to.
Just as the Premier League has emaciated the FA Cup, the CL has emaciated the UEFA Cup/EL.
The commonality, and short answer of the root of the problem, is money.
In all honesty Europa is the poorer sibling of Champions League, always will be. It has more credance because we have more fallen giants regularly enter, namely us!
Once we qualify for CL regularly Europa will be no more important than UEFA cup was!
I don't know about you guys, but I personally am above the Europa League. I'm just too good for it.

We are where we are because of the quality / standards we've had on display for 7 odd years. Rightly, we are entering competition pertaining to that standard.
It's difficult for us who have been fine dining to suddenly be eating at McDs! Our palette has been spoilt and we crave the taste of quality cuisine again!
Even the Cup Winners Cup was more interesting than the Europa League.
The Europa League just feels like a tournament for losers.
I remember Villa wining in 1982..... Within 30 seconds of the final whistle there was a commercial of a old man walking in the bar. I think he said well done the Villa. Brilliant! I forget the beer maybe Ind Coupe?

Pretty obvious, when only the league winners could enter the CL it meant the majority of top clubs (especially from leagues with more than 1 good side) would have to compete in the UEFA Cup. Often the league winners weren’t the best side the next season too.

So let me repeat again, because you don’t understand,
Quite a lot of the teams that were in the UEFA Cup back then went on to win their own leagues in that season.
They are teams that would now be in the current CL.
European Cup > Champions League
UEFA Cup > Europa League
Football’s good old days > Sterilised, VARcical, middle class-infested, astronomical ticket price, Sky TV, prawn sandwich, zero atmosphere stadium shiiiiitball
