I think he's one of the better commentators out there. BBC should take him, he's better than that smug-sounding Guy Mowbray.

He used to work for them. I think it was at the 1996 Olympics where he commentated on one of the football matches and his commentary didn't sit very well with them so they demoted him to commentate on the basketball instead

I've never been a fan of CT at all. He's got to be one of the most bias commentators going. He couldn't hide his support for Man Utd whenever he commentated on their games and to this day always drops in something about Utd when commentating on any England game.

"That player used to play for Man Utd"
"This player is wanted by Man Utd"

Peter Drury is rather wasted on ITV too....although I think he does CL on BT these days too...rated commentator IMO

BBCs Barry Davis was the best TV commentator.

Who is the tool who commentates on BT Sport with Robbie Savage? He speaks quicker than his brain tells him what words to say.

I'm always amazed by the vitriol people reserve for pundits, and it's not always - or even usually - down to club rivalry. There are no pundits I dislike: even players I "loved to hate" as a United fan, such as Shearer and Keown, I like on screen. The one thing that always frustrates me about pundits is that, for all their years playing the game, they are rarely insightful and usually just state the obvious.

"Why's he playing so well now?"
"Because he's more confident than he was."

That kind of thing. I've said it before but, his views on gender notwithstanding, Andy Gray is the best football pundit I can remember. He'd genuinely pick up on things you just hadn't noticed.

i was at a conference at that swanky hotel near marylebone station a few years ago - the landmark i think - and we were in the bar. at c. 10pm. in walks johm motson, who proceeds to sit at a table on his own, and talk to himself on and off for the next 2 hours.

and not talk to himself as in "ooh, yes, lovely pint that", but as in alcoholic sleeping rough talking to himself. it was a very sad sight, and this was maybe a decade ago, so when he was very much the lead commentator for the bbc.

motson used to stay and frequent liverpool city centre hotels and casinos back in the day when commentating on Liverpool/Everton matches

My Dad used to work in Liverpool City Centre Hiotels/Casinos that Motson used..

Told me , Motson was in reality an absolute of a man...far removed from his TV persona

Davies is probably my all-time favourite too. Legend.

He style was a lot more intelligent than the other shouters like John Motson, Granada's Gerald Sinstadt and Brian Moore down on London ITV.

Motson should have retired years ago. Have you heard him on Talksport these days. Terrible .

I'd imagine that even Motty himself can't believe he's still about...

to be fair the footy commentators in the UK pale in comparison to those in Spain...or Argentina

Motson is the best of all time. The current BBC one is excellent also though.

Sam whatshisface is woeful, don't understand why ITV would demote Clive other than one based on age. He should give SKY or the BBC ago.

ITV's footy coverage is generally p1ss poor even with Clive on commentary, they've not been the same since losing CL coverage.
