I've no issue at all with players doing things outside football if they train well and give it their best when playing. People criticise social media use but I'd rather that than players rolling out of nightclubs at 3am every morning drunk. The time spent, in reality, on social media will be minimal anyway as I'm certain most have people managing their accounts. It's just a newer way of promoting things and will be here to stay.

Talking of outside interests (and this is by no means a go at the great man himself) the outside interest that has caused most damage to United was SAF and horse racing. Had he not had that argument with Magnier and McManus in the early 2000s then we may not have the Glazers as owners now...

I expect we’ll end up paying his wages next year anyway.

Another nomination for most impactful behaviour outside of football would be the drinking culture in the squad that Fergie inherited. I imagine some of the people here who have such visceral negative reactions to Lingard were much less troubled 30 years ago by suggestions that the likes of Robson and McGrath were regularly out drinking heavily.

Mate, it’s one thing downing a few pints with the lads, it’s a whole new ballgame “flossing” in front of 76,000 people

Exactly, Geoff. It's a culture war thing. Something for which there's no great rational objection, but which upsets men who are my age, because they don't share my sense of still being deeply relevant to the times I'm living in.

I must admit I do look at the antics of the likes of Pogba and Lingard and cringe at times but, if truth be told, I used to do pretty stupid things when I was younger too.

When I think about it though why should what they do in their private lives be of any consequence to me. As long as the club are happy (and the marketing teams will certainly be encouraging this kind of social media activity) then I'm happy.

As Red Russian stated above the drinking culture was worse.

Tell me about it, every time I crack a funny in the company of my 18 yr old lad, then look at him for the expectant laugh, all I get is the death stare followed by “Really?”

Not my cup of tea either, though by all accounts he is extremely popular with a certain demographic, and is far more important to United's marketing efforts than he is to the team.

I have no problem with players goofing around on social media - and compared to the antics of, say, Jack Grealish, who many on here would like to sign, it's true choirboy stuff - but the clear issue with Jesse is that on the field he has contributed very little for 2 years now, and he doesn't have the credit in the bank that someone like DDG has (and there are plenty, myself included, who would happily sell him).

You're blatantly either 12 or in your late 50s.

Still wound up? Wow, it's been a couple of days now, if you're still this upset I must have been right.

Lingard does say in the article that he got into some bother with Ole for a social media posting last summer. A posting that obviously went beyond the cringe that his videos can sometimes induce as Diafol alluded to earlier.

The drinking culture at utd 30 years ago i think was well known at the time and something fergie correctly addressed as soon as he took over. Attitudes to alcohol, sports nutrition and psychology were about to radically change in football as it approached the 90's and beyond.

Yep, not-Wahl, that thing you said really got under my skin and made me ask a whole lot of questions about the person I am and the one I want to be.

......as long as we don't lose Phil Jones, I feel next season will be the best since Sir Alex left. Phil's breakthrough season is 2020/21. Jesse as well - 10 + goal season.

Couldn’t give a fack what kind of dances he does when he works as hard for the club on and off the pitch as he does, and dedicates so much of his time to charity work.

Him and a Rashford are fantastic role models for kids in a world sadly very short of the same.

Before this season he played mostly wide forward. Then Ole got the crazy idea that he's a no. 10 and his been awful ever since.
