Chelsea's past it players

Willian for free and no brainer will prove vital in coming season, Cech was Okaish while Luiz just won us the FA Cup ffs and has experience in abundance a leader we need for the likes of Saka, Saliba and Martinelli.

posted on 9/8/20

I guess the reasons are we can actually sign them. Like Cech, Willian didn't want to leave London so that automatically gives us strength in the chase.

No a signing I am a fan of, but let us see.

And, no, he is not replacing AMN. AMN is a player who we can sell for profit in order to help us achieve our other, harder to obtain, transfer targets and would only be sold if the money is right to do so.

Think of it this way instead - imagine we bought Willian for £15.6 million and gave him a salary of £0 a week for 3 years. Would you say that would be a lot of money to pay for a player of his calibre or is that cheap?

That is the equivalent of getting him for free and paying him £100k a week. £15.6 million is peanuts in today's world. Even if he doesn't turn out to be a great signing we've not lost out on much

As above, William's a no brainer imo and the type of player that we desperately need. Also someone like Reiss Nelson can only thrive on playing in the same squad as Willian - both are pretty similar but Willian obviously vastly more experienced

Didn't think I'd ever live to see it. But it's finally happened.

We've officially replaced Spurs in the "Paul Konchesky Circuit" of London clubs for players who want a fresh start without the hassle of moving house.

But is Willian going to help get us top 4?

Luis didn't win us that Cup, the goalie behind him did. It's the goalie who's been the defence's difference maker. His organisation plus a revitalised Xhaka in a system that's works for him.

Buying a geriatric WB/MF whilst selling an outstanding young WB/MF who still has the potential to be just as good, maybe even better. Makes no sense at all. The deal is only a "No brainer" if we keep AMN too.

OP

Plain and simple, it's the free/dirt cheap which is the reason. You want a PL player that good who's only 24/25, you're probably going to have to spend 50-80 mil nowadays to get him. Can get Willian for 20-30 mil.

Willian has one purple patch a season. Lasts about 6 games and then is average for the rest of the season. 32 now so no spring chicken. Let's see if he justifies those wages.

It’s a bizarre signing imo.

Undoubted quality but not a great work rate and goes missing, for a manager who seems to be concentrating on youth and energy.

John Terry.

If you don't get the quote then I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about it.

They said the same about Czech. He will save us 15 points a season they said. Instead he cost us games and points.

Not a big fan of signing a 32 year old to rebuilt a squad.

But let's see how it pans out for us.

It's that Agent Kia. For every Martinelli, he's bought us a Luiz

Hard to know what to think about this deal.

I'd like us to be more creative in the market, rather than signing past it players. At the same time, Willian is free, improves us, and can lend a helping hand to youngsters such as Gabi, Saka, Reiss etc. If it's 100k pw, that really isnt too bad.

Meh.

For me the main thing is that Arteta is happy with that signing. If Kia or Don Raul or Edu buying the players without Arteta's go we are facked.

Also, if arteta wants him, then I trust him. I just hope it's not dodgy agent dealings.

Everything you've just said involves money going out the door.

No residual resale value. Certainly no profit. Not to mention a very unambitious approach to player amortization.

Literally having to sell a Saka/Iwobi every year in order to keep a retirement home running.

Don't really get the hate for Willian. Yeah he might be 32 but his level has not dropped.

The guy has excellent ball retention skill and is a player that has that low centre of gravity which we don't have.

He can play on the left and is better than anything we have.

United wanted him as did barca

He scores free kicks and never misses a free kick

It's a no brainer

If he helps us to get top 4 then it won't be money thrown away. It's not like Iwobi has been much help in achieving that at either arsenal or Everton.

That is pretty shiiit for a deadball expert.
Pepe has 10 assists and been widely panned - even though it is his debut season and playing for a mid table side.

Willian does have his qualities. But none of the 7 sides who finished above us this season would even entertain this deal.
