Why wasnt Poch backed like this?

Lets not go overboard here. They are not as good as Chelsea's business for example and last season Poch was backed.

because he wouldnt bang on the door of the chairman asking for players(presumably)

also from quotes from him he liked smaller squads with youth making up the squad.

He also said something about a painful transition before he lost the dressing room.

It's funny. Poch got that team playing so far above their normal levels that Levy probably couldn't justify spending big money.

Whereas now they are out of the CL and in a position where the manager actually holds most of the cards.

Levy has done well so far this summer but it is a bit late (we are playing catch up now, where previously when we went a summer without signing anyone we were 3rd place with CL football, players more in peak etc)

not signing anyone 2 years a go had us needing about 10 players last summer and we got 5.

He mentioned it lots of time in interviews, Levy must have know. Surely it was brought up in internal meetings.

In Poch's book, he talks about Levy wanting to buy a DM and Poch saying no, he will turn Dier into a DM.

I wonder how much of our lack of spending was down to Poch rather than Levy?

One thing is for certain, José will know who he wants and will tell Levy.

Yes, but talking in riddles during an interview is a bit different to sitting down with Levy and telling him we need player X, Y and Z otherwise we'll continue to go backwards.

Poch got backed pretty heavily last summer

I think levy has changed his policy the last 2 seasons

Let's see how this window pans out after closing, have a feeling some of those touted are no better than we already have, let's give it a month or so, and can Mourinho integrate them into the team?

I agree with this. We did after all break our transfer record on Ndombele last summer with Poch.

There may be a slight feeling of favouring Mourinho at the moment but when you boil it down I don't think he's been any more backed than Poch was. Add to the fact we finished outside the top 4 for the first time in a while and Levy is desperate to get back in there. The Bale deal makes it look that way too, but that's a bit of a one off as far as the conditions being right for this particular time to go for him.

I think Jose is far more flexible in his players than poch was towards the end.

Last two summer windows have been decent imo

Not defending Levy but I imagine that his reasoning last Summer was something like:

'we just came 2nd in the champions league and qualified for next season (thus meeting his goal), the squad is good enough to do it again, just in case it's not here are two great prospects (Gio and Ddombele) one of whom is a record signing'.

I don't think it's the right mentality but Poch clearly failed to convince him that things were crumbling.

I think the reason Poch was sacked looking back over it was his comments before the CL Final, and also sbecasuse of his remarks over his role when asked about transfers. Like any job you bad mouth your boss your out the door.

By all accounts he had a good relationship with Levy so a few off the cuff remarks which could not offended Levy would not be the reason in IMO.

From the outside looking in results and losing the dressing room would be my guess for getting the boot.

Levy must have been gutted to pull the trigger after everything Poch did. Getting us into the top 4, all that extra revenue to help fund the new stadium which went over budget. Can't have been an easy decision for him.

Maurinho was banging on his door, he was living in London, out of work, Spurs were going backwards, the precision with which it happened was spectacular, virtually over a couple of days, so wasnt really much thought went into it, bang your out, bang your in

I'm pretty sure the main reason he was sacked was because of our results. We had an appalling end to the previous season and our start to the new season wasn't much better.

What a fantastic take on the situation LOL

I think we need a word of caution with all these signings. On paper it's great Levy is splashing the cash but in reality, the more we buy in one window, the less cohesive the team. We may hit the same problems we faced in 2013 when we bought 7 players in 2 weeks. I think Chelsea will face the same problem. I've seen a few times already that Doherty isn't on the same wavelength as his teammates and the same will apply to Bale, PEH, Reg, Skriniar and Milik (assuming those are the two coming in).

That said, under Mourinho we couldn't look less cohesive and that's largely with players that have been with each other for 4-5 years or more.

I don't know much about Skriniar but if we're spending upwards of 50 million, I can only assume the second striker will be utter dogshlt as we won't have any dosh left.

OP, poch got 100m on 2 midfielders then refused to start them both from the beginning. Look at Everton. Ancelotti threw all three in.

If Poch had done this I think the season might have worked out different for him.

Ndombele started from the beginning under Poch though..

GLC was injured.

Technically Poch loaned GLC and Jose signed him permantley in Jan. FYI

OP

Where do you get the idea Poch wasn`t backed, he spent over £331 million from season 2015-19, I have not even included his first season.

Lo Celso £14 million
Sessignon 24 million
Ndombele 54 million
Sanchez 36 million
Moura 25 million
Aurier 22 million
Llorente 13 million
Foyth 11 million
Sissoko 31 million
Janssen 19 million
Wanyama 12 million
N`koudou 10 million
Son 27 million
Toby 14 million
N`Jie 12 million
Trippier 4 million
Wimmer 5 million

I mean to say he wasn`t given money is a nonsense, he was given plenty, just didn`t spent it that well. Only Son, Toby and Trippier for £4 million can be called successful buys as it stands. Lo Celso and Ndombele jury still out, the rest have not lived up to their price tag according to most on the board.
